The roots of the apostasy

There is a lot of talk these days, of the apostasy plaguing modern Christendom.

Christians like Rick Warren, Beth Moore, and Chuck Swindoll, are promoting contemplative prayer; a pagan, New Age practice of divination. The Emergent Church has abandoned the bible altogether, and some of Rome’s daughters are heading back to their mother.

The question I have is “Did this all just happen out of the blue, in the last twenty-or-so years?”

I don’t think so. I think the roots of the modern apostasy came from way back. They go back at least to the reformation. When the reformers left the Roman church, they took things that didn’t belong to them.

When I say “reformers” I don’t merely mean Anglicans, Presbyterians, Lutherans, and Methodists. Baptists themselves also trace their roots to the reformation. While Baptists would repudiate some of Rome’s errors, like infant baptism, Transubstantiation, and works salvation, there were numerous errors that they held on to.

One error that is bigger than it would appear on the surface is the authority of the Baptist pastor. Many Baptist pastors, especially independent ones, have actually more authority in their church, than Catholic priests!

In my post “The Pastor vs. The Elder” I documented how the biblical church was to be organized according to Scripture.

One philosophy that came along with the lifting up of the pastor, was the idea that the pastor was to be the interpreter of Scripture for the congregation. This is contrary to many Scriptures, and has led to a great many abuses.

Here is how God wants you to behave, even if an apostle comes to you.

10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Acts 17:10-11

Even if someone like an apostle of God, or your pastor, tells you some doctrine or other, you are to check it out in the Scriptures. Don’t ever take something they, or I say, without checking it out in the bible. All fallen men are fallible, even your pastor.

One thing that came along with the lifting up of the pastor is a spiritual pride, and the idea that “we know so much more than those who came before us”.

Years ago I wrote David Cloud, of the Way of Life website, regarding one of his articles about the use of wine. I told him that until the mid 1800s all churches, the world over, had used wine in their communion services. He agreed that they had, but said that they were disobedient!

Amazing! What he was saying is that all the Christian churches, for some 1800 years, were disobedient, including the Waldenses, and Albigenses, and all those fifty million Christians martyred by the Catholic church during the middle ages, and the inquisition!

No doubt Mr. Cloud would claim that many of those martyrs had a similar faith to his own, and yet, he would choose to dishonor them rather than admit he had made a mistake!

His attitude comes from an idea originating in the mid-1800s, that says “wine” in the bible really means “grape juice”, or that “wine in the bible could be wine or grape juice, depending on how it is used”. This allows them to say that any time wine is used in a good context, as in a blessing, it must mean “grape juice”.

This argument is a new innovation (circa 1850s), and is incredibly arrogant, and yet ignorant at the same time. There actually was a word available to the writers of the New Testament, in the Greek, that meant “must” or “grape juice” – trux/τρύξ. This word does not appear in the pages of the New Testament for the simple reason that this was not what they were drinking.

The condemnations found in the Scriptures, regarding wine, always refer to excessive use, never to normal, ordinary use.

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Ephesians 5:18

People who say that drinking wine, or alcohol, is a sin, then have to do all kinds of mental gymnastics to prove that Jesus didn’t drink, or serve wine. These people, who often claim to believe in the literal interpretation of Scripture, then have to follow the esoteric methods of the liberals to prove their point! “Ah! But it’s for a good cause”, I can hear them say.

What does the Scripture actually say?

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil. 34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! 35 But wisdom is justified of all her children. Luke 7:33-34

Jesus is providing a contrast here. John did not drink wine, and Jesus did. They were doing the opposite of each other, and both were condemned by the Pharisees. This is the plain-sense meaning of this passage. And by the way, the word for wine used here is “oinos” the word for fermented grape juice.

Jesus was also heard to say:

There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man. Mark 7:15

One man told me that I was taking this out of context. The problem he has is that the word “nothing” is an all-inclusive word. Nothing is left out. The objective truth of this statement is that there is nothing you can eat or drink that will defile you. Not wine, nor milk, nor even gasoline can defile you. Gasoline might kill you, but it still will not defile you, rather it is the sin that comes from your heart that defiles you.

Man often focuses on the external, and neglects the internal relationship with God!

As I noted in a recent post, Jesus stated that He did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfil it (Matthew 5:17). So, what does the law say about wine and alcohol?

24 And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee: 25 Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose: 26 And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household, Deuteronomy 14:24-26

Here the Israelites were commanded to bring a tithe (tenth) of their crops to Jerusalem. If the distance was too far to carry such a large load, they were to sell the tithe and bring the money instead. When they got to Jerusalem they were to buy what ever they wanted and have a feast there. Just in case you might have thought that “wine” was really grape juice, God made sure you would understand that he was talking about alcoholic wine, by the use of the words “strong drink”. Notice also that this “tithe” was for their own use, it did not go to the priests or Levites!

Remember, Jesus is the fulfilment of the law. Deuteronomy is the law. This passage is about Jesus in some way. He is the fulfilment of this passage!

Here is another one;

And the drink offering thereof shall be the fourth part of an hin for the one lamb: in the holy place shalt thou cause the strong wine to be poured unto the LORD for a drink offering. Numbers 28:7

Leroy Pennel, one of my former pastors, who is a fanatical opponent of alcohol, told me that “I have no problem with alcoholic wine being poured on the altar”, and yet, he would tell you that drinking alcohol is a sin. He would also say that alcoholic wine is an unclean substance. He did tell me that in so many words. This would be like saying “I don’t eat pork, but it is fine to sacrifice a pig on the altar”!

No. God did not want anything unclean on the Jewish altar. He would not want pigs, or honey, or horses, to be sacrificed, but he did command alcoholic wine to be poured on the altar as a “drink offering”! You can’t call something a “drink” if no one drinks it!

As Jesus said, He is the fulfilment of the law, and that means that He fulfilled Numbers 28:7 just as much as the rest of the Law! There are forty references to “drink offerings” in the law of Moses. It seems every time an animal was sacrificed, there was also to be a drink offering provided.

Numerous times the drink offering was referred to as a “sweet savour” for the Lord.

And for a drink offering thou shalt offer the third part of an hin of wine, for a sweet savour unto the LORD. Numbers 15:7

Yes, Jesus is the fulfilment of the Law! Jesus did drink alcoholic wine, and He did serve it to His disciples. The last supper was the last time He drank wine before He went to the cross. This is what He said about it;

But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom. Matthew 26:29

He was then beginning to fulfill the law of the priest;

Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations: Leviticus 10:9

The priest was not to drink wine when he performed his priestly duty. Jesus has become our High Priest, and does not drink wine at this point in His ministry. As He said in Matthew 6:19, He will drink it at the Marriage supper of the Lamb! I’m afraid there may be a few Baptists, or evangelicals, there who will say to Him when He serves them “Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean”(Acts 10:14)! Yes! I’m afraid we have a lot to learn about our Lord! It would have been easier if we had just believed the bible to begin with!

Jesus, however, did drink vinegar while on the cross, which tells us that wine vinegar is no longer considered “fruit of the vine”.

And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. Matthew 27:48

This and the previous attempt to give him vinegar mixed with “gall” were fulfilments of Psalms 69:21;

They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

So, if it is so clear that Jesus drank and served alcoholic wine, what is this idea all about?  Why would they say that wine doesn’t mean wine?

It is about the authority of a man to change the Word of God to suit his own ideas. The above mentioned pastor grew up in the home of an alcoholic. Because of this experience he interprets the bible with a great hatred for alcohol in mind. Rather than admit that his father’s alcoholism was the result of a depraved heart, he blames a substance that is neither good nor bad.

Like the Pope, these pastors have such a low view of Scripture, that they think they need to “help God out a little”!  Like the Pope, they think God has given them this authority!

The ancient Baptists had enough respect for the Word of God that they would not change it to suit their own ideas. That changed in the mid-nineteenth century, during the time when men began to think they knew more than God. This was the same time that Darwin published his work on evolution, and it was the same time that “higher criticism” was making inroads. It was also the same time that Baptists, and other evangelicals, began to celebrate Christmas.

This was not a coincidence, it was all a part of the same mindset.  This was when Christians began to lift up men instead of Jesus Christ!

The truth is that while the reformation was only a partial return to the truth, those who left Catholicism then, have been making their way back for some time now. It didn’t start with Rick Warren, and Joel Osteen, but with our ancestors some two hundred years ago!

It is my opinion that this idea that “wine” really meant “grape juice” was an experiment to see how much pastors could get away with. I’m not sure just who was behind this experiment, but I think it could be Satan. Once he saw that Christians were no longer checking into the Scriptures to see if these things were true, then he was able to introduce other, more serious heresies, until we find ourselves in the mess we are in today.

Joel Osteen, Rick Warren, and Brian McLaren are the end result of Christians thinking that it was OK to change the Word of God for a “good cause”! Christians have been adding to, and taking away from, the Word of God for so long that most don’t even notice they are doing it!

18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Revelation 22:18-19

Does your salvation depend on a correct understanding of wine in the bible?  No.  But those who change the plain teaching of Scripture, to suit their own ideas, are indicating that they have a heart problem.  Those who say Jesus couldn’t drink or serve alcoholic wine, have created another Jesus, a Jesus not found in Scripture, and I am not certain that that Jesus can save anyone!  I want the Jesus of the bible, and none other!

Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.  Matthew 7:14

Aliens and the End Times Delusion

In the last chapter of The Spirit of Prophecy, I tackled the idea of aliens and UFOs, but have mainly concentrated on the subjects of the other chapters on this blog.

The question remains, however, are aliens and UFOs a foreign idea to Scripture, or can they actually be found there? What are UFOs anyway? Does this subject have anything to do with the Great Delusion spoken about in Scripture?

At a prophecy conference I attended in the mid 1990s, Grant Jefferey made an observation that made a great impression on me. He stated that those people who have reported having made contact with alien beings have all had one thing in common. They have all had some prior experience with the Occult.

It may have been playing with Ouija boards, one time, or taking some hallucinogenic drug, going to a psychic, undergoing hypnosis, or some other Occult experience. Don’t forget Yoga, and other forms of contemplative “prayer”. All of these experiences are common with the ancient practices of divination.

Gary Bates, of Creation Ministries International, has written an excellent book on the subject of UFOs and aliens, which I used when researching for the Spirit of Prophecy, “Alien Intrusion”. You can read more about it at his website .  Mr. Bates’ book is very scientific, and highly recommended. While I have come to similar conclusions, for my part, I was more interested in what the bible says about this phenomenon than the experiences of others.

You may have picked up on it already, that the beings that claim to be aliens from another part of the universe, are actually angelic beings, from another dimension. In fact many of these beings use names that once were the names of ancient pagan gods! Now, that is interesting! If these beings once claimed to be gods, and now claim to be aliens, when were, or are they lying?

So. Are they to be found in the pages of the bible? Angels are mentioned, and also devils, but are they ever seen in the modern form of aliens? I think so. Have a look at a verse from the later part of Revelation.

And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. Revelation of John 16:13

It’s rather strange to refer to unclean spirits as frogs, isn’t it? Why would John use such terminology? I think the answer is that John was not familiar with 20th and 21st century depictions of aliens as “Little green men”. John had seen frogs along the shore of the lake of Galilee, and perhaps the Jordan river, and maybe even in some of the swamps of Israel, but he was not privy to modern alien movies and cartoons.

http://free-extras.com/images/ufo-2779.htm

A shy green alien, how cute!

How about frogs?

I think the best explanation as to what John saw coming out of the mouth of the Beast, the False Prophet, and the Dragon, is that he saw demons, looking like little green men.

The rock group Styx was one of my favorite bands when I was a teenager. Their album “The Grand Illusion” was one I actually owned.

The song from the album “Come Sail Away” was one of the top ten rock ballads of all time, depending on who you ask, of course. The music is brilliant, and designed to hook the listener, with its catchy tune and rising crescendo. In the mean time it is teaching a philosophy. Look at what he is saying in his lyrics, specifically the last two verses;

Come Sail Away

Songwriter: DE YOUNG, DENNIS

“A gathering of angels appeared above my head,
They sang to me this song of hope and this is what they said,
They said come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me lads,
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me,”

“I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise,
We climbed aboard their starship, we headed for the skies
Singing come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me lads
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me…”

Come Sail Away lyrics © Universal Music Publishing Group. Lyrics found at http://www.lyricsfreak.com/s/styx/come+sail+away_20132868.html  Content used under fair use guidelines.

In the third verse he speaks of “a gathering of angels” singing a “song of hope”. Their “song of hope” is “come sail away with me”. In the next verse it turns out that the angels are actually aliens, and they take him away on their “starship”.

Amazingly Dennis De Young has actually told the truth in this song, albeit in a backward sort of way. The beings that once were identified as angels, now want to be identified as aliens! Of course they still are angels, they just want you to think they are aliens.

If you have been following this blog you will be aware that I have identified the people descended from Jacob’s brother Esau as the people of the Antichrist. The little book of Obadiah is an End Times letter addressed to the people of Edom, the descendants of Esau. In this book there is a curious statement that fits very well with the lyrics above;

Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD. Obadiah 1:4

The Lord is not saying that these people could actually go to the stars. What he is saying is that even if they could, he could still find them and drag them down to Judgment.

But why would the people of Edom think they could go to the stars? I think the answer lies in the End Times delusion. The “aliens” the Antichrist is in contact with, will tell him that they can take him to the stars. I think they will tell him that Jesus Christ is “just another alien”, like them. They will tell him that if things go wrong, they will protect him somewhere “out there” in the universe. He, and his people, will believe them because their thinking is so small that they don’t believe that Jesus is actually the God who created the universe.

There are numerous websites, and groups, that already claim that Jesus was an alien, or half-alien! Satan is already working on his End Times delusion!

This also explains why Jesus said;

And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Matthew 24:30

So why would the tribes of earth mourn, and not bow down and confess that Jesus is Lord? It is because they are still deluded. They think that “the sign of the Son of man in heaven” is a hostile starship orbiting the earth, and coming to take over the planet! Rather than bow to the King of kings, the one who died for them, they will pick up any weapon available and go to Jerusalem to fight Him! It will result in the complete slaughter of those armies!

The believers will also mourn, knowing what is coming! They will mourn for their deluded friends and family, and they will mourn for lost time.

Jesus, when He returns, will act in accord with the expectations of the deluded masses! Why? It is because they have committed the unforgivable sin.

Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. Matthew 12:31

The story, in Matthew 12, begins when Jesus is casting out demons, and the priests and Levites attribute this miracle to action by the devil. This is the unforgivable sin; to attribute a genuine miracle by the Holy Spirit to be the work of the devil.

The day is coming when the whole world will witness a genuine miracle of God… the rapture of the Church. In that day, if anyone claims the rapture of the Church was an “Alien abduction” they are essentially saying that Satan has grabbed those people and removed them from the planet. How you react to such an event will determine if you are deluded, or if you are saved.

This then, is the End Times application of the unforgivable sin. What will happen to those people is that the Holy Spirit will no longer convict them of their sin, and they will go to their deaths justified in their own minds.

This blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the ultimate insult against Him. He is here for the purpose of convicting us of our sins, as a favor to us. He doesn’t owe salvation to anyone. All He has to do to condemn anyone forever, is to simply leave us alone. Without the Holy Spirit’s conviction of our sins, we don’t realize how even the smallest sin is an affront to God. Thus, unless He convicts us of those sins, we would never repent or ask for forgiveness.

It is not that they couldn’t physically repent and be saved. They could but they won’t, because the Holy Spirit will leave them alone.

Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts. Revelation 9:21

And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory. Revelation 16:9

And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. Revelation 16:11

So why won’t these people repent, when the judgments of God come against them? It all goes back to the Great Delusion. They believe the world is under attack by a powerful alien entity. They think the planet belongs to them, and this “alien Jesus” is coming to take it from them. Jesus is angry at the same thing the Holy Spirit is angry with. He will not do anything that will wake these people up, rather He will act in accordance with their delusions.

This explains the “strange act” of Isaiah 28:21;

For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

Here, in the context of the return of the Lord, he talks about acting strangely. Now, Jesus is the Sovereign Lord. He can act any way he wishes, so why would he act “strangely”? It is because He is keeping his enemies deluded. Why would He want to keep them deluded? Because they have committed the unforgivable sin.

Yet, in His wrath, He is still good enough to forgive them if they were to repent.

11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Thesalonians 2:11-12

So, who is it who sends the strong delusion? It is God, and He will use Satan and his fallen angels to do it. Will he act contrary to the delusion? No, not until Armageddon is over.

I had always heard that the idea of a sword coming from the mouth of Jesus is only figurative, that he will kill His enemies with a word. Given the above, and especially Isaiah 28:21 I’m not so sure anymore.  It might actually be literal!

And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. Revelation of John 19:21

Now, go back an have a look at the cover of Styx’s album. What is the difference between a “Grand Illusion” and a “Great Delusion”? These two phrases are actually synonymous. They mean exactly the same thing.

Satan likes to play games with his own people. I think this is what he is doing here. Not only does he want to fool God’s people, he wants to keep his own people deluded.  His plans for the great delusion are contained on this album. You won’t find them in the song entitled “The Grand Illusion” but in the song entitled “Come Sail Away”.  On Judgment day he will mock those who followed his delusion.

Who is the person on the horse? Probably the Antichrist. Who is the female face? Likely Satan himself. He is a cross-dresser after all. He likes to appear beautiful, yet his goal is the destruction of the human race.

Many preachers won’t touch the subject of aliens and UFOs.  Perhaps they feel that it is merely foolish dreams and the subject of “B” movies.  By doing so they are not doing a service for the members of their flock, who might be left behind after the rapture.  Paul said that “we are not ignorant of [the devil’s] devices” (II Corinthians 2:11), yet I am afraid many Christians, and church adherents are very ignorant, and are ripe for a great delusion!

Obama a judgment from God?

Why is it that the events of the last few years, especially those of the last few weeks, seem so crazy?

It is my opinion that we have passed a point of no return.  God is giving us over to our depravity, and preparing us for judgment.

This then is why the USA has a president like B. Hussein Obama.  I am sitting in Canada and watching what is going on across the border, and I just have to shake my head.

After the killing of the American ambassador to Libya, the Libyan president stated that this was not a random act of spontaneous violence, but a planned terrorist attack, and still the White House continues to repeat the mantra that it was because of a silly video.

Libyan President says Ambassador Steven’s death was the result of a pre-planned attack, not because of a video!

It appears that Obama is doing his best to put a positive spin on any act of Muslim terrorism.  I think this is because he is a Muslim.

Obama admits he is a Muslim

The truth is that it really doesn’t matter what religion Obama adheres to.  If God wants to use him to bring judgment against the USA, God is capable of doing it.  Don’t forget the USA approved of abortion long before Obama became president.  Don’t forget several states approved of gay marriage before Obama became president.  The depravity prevalent in American society has been in a continuous downward slide since the end of World War II.

No.  Obama is a judgment from God against the USA, and he’s not alone.  People like Rick Warren, Joel Osteen, Creflo Dollar, Joyce Meyer, Kenneth Copland, Brian McLaren, and many, many more are also filling this same role.  Most professing Christians have given up on doctrine and are wanting their best life now!

What Paul said to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:3 really applies to most modern Christians, and to the population as a whole.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. II Timothy 4:3-4

The idea that the USA can continue on racking up debt at a record, unsustainable pace, is a fable.  The idea that God wants you rich is a fable.  Think about it!  If you have your best life NOW, you are heading for the Lake of Fire!

Don’t think that it will be better if the USA elects Romney.  He’s just Obama-lite!  Thinking you can vote in a better tomorrow is ignoring the real issue.  I’m not talking about conservative ideals, I’m talking about repentance before Almighty God.  God’s name is Jesus Christ, by the way.

The truth is that God has a time-line.  If God’s judgment is according to a time-line, then, when that time approaches, it will be impossible to hold it off.

And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. Acts 1:7

Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? Luke 18:8b

The implied answer is; No! But God always has a remnant.  I am convinced that only a remnant will be raptured.  This is why Jesus told us;

Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Luke 21:36

The bible clearly says “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21)  However the bible also says;

For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. II Corinthians 11:4

I am so concerned that the majority of professing Christians have accepted another Jesus.  Jesus is not a magic name.  You have to call on the true, biblical Jesus, to save you.  I have come to the conclusion after a lot of study, prayer, and soul searching, that most Christians have prayed to a Jesus they have made up in their own mind.

The Western cultural Jesus is not the Jesus of the bible.  Western culture, including that of the USA and Canada, has more in common with pagan Rome, than it does with Israel.  Even churches that claim to be biblical, like Baptists and Presbyterians, have swallowed more of Rome’s doctrines than they ought to.  They ought not to have accepted any!

What if you claim your Jesus is the Jesus of the bible, and then attribute characteristics to Him that the bible does not support?  At some point you have a false Jesus.

It’s easy to point to Joel Osteen, Rick Warren, the Church of England, and the Church of Rome, and find their errors, but have you allowed the Word of God to change your heart?  Can your church stand up to biblical scrutiny?  Can you?

I apologize if this post has seemed to be rambling from subject to subject.  The truth is that they are connected.  If God is about to judge our society, it is because it is His time, and His churches are in the process of abandoning Him.  It means that many professing Christians will suffer His judgment along with the world!

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day (the rapture) shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; II Thessalonians 2:3

The David Sandwich

David, king of Jerusalem, is seldom preached about today, except the part about his failure. It is not difficult to find a preacher willing to talk about David’s affair with Bathsheba, and his subsequent murder of her husband Uriah.

David, in spite of his failure, is actually the most significant person in the Old Testament. David is the only person in the entire bible who is called “A man after God’s own heart”. There is no other person with this distinction, and it is not a distinction given to him by his peers, or by a priest or prophet. No, David’s title of being “A man after God’s own heart” was actually given to him by God Himself!

But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee. I Samuel 13:14

Significantly, this distinction was also repeated in the New Testament;

And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. Acts 13:22

God has men He calls servants, apostles, prophets, and friends, but there is no one else that God ever gave the title of “A man after my own heart”.

It should not surprise us, then, that the gospel of Jesus Christ is sandwiched between two mentions of the name of David;

The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” Matthew 1:1

And,

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. Revelation 22:16

This is not just a title for the Messiah. Though Jesus is a direct descendant of David, through his mother, I think there is more here than a simple reference to His genealogy. When God says that David is a “man after My own heart”, He is saying that we can learn about God by studying the life of David. Because Jesus is that God, we can learn about Jesus by studying David!

God didn’t inspire the writers of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles, so that Church-age saints could ignore them. A lot is said today, about the “context” of scripture, but what is not often mentioned is that David forms the context of the first coming of Christ. What I mean is that the nation that Jesus came to was saturated with stories of David. Their national mindset was framed, in part, by the bible’s stories of David, and God’s interaction with him.

There is one other Old Testament person that the bible says is like Jesus; Moses.

The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; Deuteronomy 18:15

A lot of preachers point to the fact that Jesus was in danger of his life, as a child hunted by the authorities, like Moses. They also point to the fact that Jesus spent time in Egypt when he was a child, also like Moses.

While Jesus’ spending time in Egypt was indeed a fulfillment of Hosea 11:1, yet I don’t think Moses was referring to the physical circumstances of Jesus upbringing when he said the messiah would be “like unto me”. I think this idea is rather shallow. Jesus was more like Moses than merely the similarities in their childhood circumstances.

Jesus was like Moses in regard to doctrine, character, and the law.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Matthew 5:17 – 18

The first mention of Moses in the New Testament is in Matthew 8:4, where Jesus tells a man He had healed, to obey the commandment of Moses with regard to having been healed. He followed that command up with numerous commands to obey Moses, and never once contradicted anything Moses had written in the law. Well, one time, but I don’t think it’s really a contradiction.

2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. 3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? 4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. 5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. 6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; 8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. 9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. Mark 10:9

Question: did God allow Moses to write something He did not approve of? Was Moses’ will so powerful that God wasn’t able to overrule him? Who’s book is it anyway?

No. What Moses wrote was exactly what God wanted him to write. Matthew’s account of the same conversation is a little different, but the differences are actually quite revealing;

7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? 8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. Matthew 19:7-9

Verse 9 explains God’s view of divorce. The one exception is “fornication”. If you are using Websters for your dictionary you will not understand what is being said here. The original Greek word translated as “fornication” actually means “any sexual sin”. This same concept is found throughout Scripture.

Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jude 1:7

By refusing to compare Scripture with Scripture many preachers have missed what is being said by Jesus in Matthew 19. His use of “fornication” is not in the context of Websters dictionary, but in the context of the bible. Just in case you don’t understand what He means by this term, it is also applied to the case of one who is married;

It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife. I Corinthians 5:1

So, if a man has his father’s wife, Paul tells us that this is fornication. The bible is an amazing dictionary. If you allow God to define His words you will find, from time to time, that the culture you live in is not entirely biblical.

Jesus use of the term “fornication” in Matthew 19 is in the context of the Word of God. Here, in verse 9, he has defined God’s intentions in allowing “putting away”, or divorce.

Is it adultery if a man has a gay affair with another man, and then goes home to his wife? No, but it is fornication! Does God want people to stay in situations that are hazardous to their health? Should this woman stay with her fornicating husband, and risk AIDS or some other STD? Should a husband stay with his wife if the opposite is true? You can, but you are not commanded to.

If what I am saying is true, there should be evidence of it in the Old Testament. Did Moses overrule God, or did God inspire Moses to write the law the way He wanted it done? Did God ensure that Moses wrote this part in such a way that this teaching of Jesus can actually be found in the law?

1 When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. 2 And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man’s wife. Deuteronomy 24:1-2

Here it is way back in Deuteronomy! The term “uncleanness” is the term at issue here. The Jews wanted this to mean that they could use any excuse to divorce their wives. Jesus, in Matthew 19:9, is explaining the intent of the Law here. What Jesus termed as “fornication”, Moses called “uncleanness”. When you put it this way, there is no conflict between Moses and Jesus.

Notice also the word “may” in verse 2. It sounds like this is her desire already.  He has really defined what he means by the use of this word, but those not looking for it will miss it.

The Pharisees did not understand these concepts because Moses had already written, in several places, that a married woman who has sex with another man deserves death. In fact a woman who was only engaged, and had sex with another man, also deserved death. Deuteronomy 22 clearly states that a young woman who has had sex before marriage deserves to be put to death.

Despite what our preachers tell us, every case where Moses’ writing about divorce would apply, the verses about the death penalty would also apply. What God was doing, through Moses, was giving the people of Israel a choice, “justice or mercy“. God was actually applying the principle found in John 8:7, in the Old Testament;

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

God was telling the people of Israel that they could insist on justice, and expect justice from God themselves, or they could practice mercy, having faith that God would be merciful to them.  God never changes, and if you think He has you’ve got the wrong god!

Jesus spoke about this in his parable of the ungrateful servant of Matthew 18:23-35. A man who had been forgiven a great debt, yet acted without mercy against one who owed him a small debt. As a result he was no longer forgiven.

A man who’s wife cheats on him should ask himself, “What is my standing before God? How great has my sin been in His eyes?”

This was Joseph’s understanding when Mary was found to be with child. He could have insisted on stoning her, but Joseph was a “just man”. He understood that his sins against God were greater than her perceived sin against him. This is why it says;

Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. Matthew 1:19

Just men are few and far between, but there is another man like Joseph in the bible… David!

David had been forgiven a great sin by God, when he committed adultery and murder against Uriah the Hittite. Later on, his son Absalom rebelled against him and took over the kingdom for a short time. During this time, Absalom had sexual relations with ten of David’s concubines. (II Samuel 15:16, 16:22, 20:3)

Had David been a Pharisee, he would have insisted that those ten women were stoned to death, however David was a just man. He understood that God’s grievance against him was much greater than his grievance against his ten wives.

As a man who had been forgiven a great sin, he could do no less for those ten women. As a result David continued to feed, clothe and shelter them for the rest of their lives, but he abstained from having any sexual relations with them. I suspect that had Absalom lived he would have divorced them, and let them live with him!

Those ten women got a glimpse of the character of God in David. I hope they were changed by the experience.

David didn’t just understand the letter of the law, he understood the intent! He knew the Holy Spirit!  This is why Christians today need to study David and Moses, in conjunction with their studies of Jesus. Jesus did not live in a vacuum.

If a man tells you “I can be faithful to the teachings of Moses, by only reading Jesus” he is lying to you! Such a man does not understand Jesus, let alone Moses!  He is guaranteed to confuse his own context with that of first century Israel!

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39

For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. John 5:46

The gospel is a David sandwich, topped with Moses. Eat it and enjoy!

Bon appétít!

Why are they in the gulf?

I have been suspicious lately of the US and European navies ostensibly doing military maneuvers in the Persian Gulf.

The US is building a coalition force to protect the Wests oil interests in the Persian gulf.

Are they there to assist Israel in a military attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities?

I think not.  They are there, first, for their own interests.  Their interests are that crude oil keeps on flowing through the Straits of Hormuz.

Zbigniew Brezinski, former US national security advisor, stated as far back as 2009

”US President Barack Obama should make it clear that if the IAF tries to launch an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities via Iraqi airspace, the US Air Force will shoot down the Israeli jets.”

Zbigniew Brzezinski, former US National Security Advisor

Will these 30 nations who have their navies in the Gulf, support an Israeli strike on Iran, or will they attempt to shoot down Israeli jets flying through the area?

It looks to me like Israel is between a rock and a hard place, but make no mistake, God is on Israel’s side.  When the Arabs make a united attack on Israel, Iran won’t be among them.

It shall be interesting to see what causes their change of heart.

The Pastor vs. the Elder

Growing up in Baptist churches I became accustomed to the “Baptist way”. “The way we do it is just the way it is.” Over time that Baptist denomination became more and more worldly, to the point where I began to look elsewhere for spiritual food.

I was initially attracted to fundamental, independent, Baptist churches because of articles by men like David Cloud, which explained the principles of simply believing the normal plain-sense meaning of the words of Scripture, also known as the “literal hermeneutic”.

Over time I came to the realization that there is a limit to how much of the bible Baptists actually take literally. It came as a shock when I realized that their traditions often take precedence over what the bible actually says.

Very often these churches are run by one man who is known as the pastor, or the elder, of the church. His rule is not to be questioned.

In the church where I was saved and baptized, I remember one preacher explaining that “the bible doesn’t really tell us how churches are to be run, so it appears that there is some room for variation within biblical New Testament churches.” At the time I thought he was correct, after all he was a preacher, and who was I?

Imagine my surprise then, when years later, I found that the bible actually does give instructions as to how the leadership of Christian churches is to be organized.

One of the first things we should note is the words of Jesus Christ Himself;

25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. Luke 22:25

8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. 9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. Matthew 23:8-11

First note that the idea of one exercising lordship over another is a fundamentally Gentile thing. Jesus was telling us that the organization of churches is to be like the Jewish synagogue, and not like Gentile governments. Leaders of churches are there to serve the church, and not the other way around.

Paul’s letters to Timothy are letters of instruction to a young pastor. These letters contain some terms and ideas against which Baptists have generally rebelled.

People really want to have a man to whom they can look toward, to make the hard decisions, but when they do this it often goes to his head. In the end he often becomes a dictator, and the ministry of the gospel becomes secondary. It becomes more about him and his position than about serving the church, or the Lord Jesus Christ.

A church with which I am acquainted, has a board of “trustees”. Let me ask you; have you ever seen this term in your bible? It is not there. This is a term that someone has invented, and added to their system of church governance. There is a biblical term for the position of leadership of the church; “the elder”.

The term “elder” was not a term only applied to the preacher, or pastor. In the New Testament church throughout the New Testament there was always a plurality of elders who ruled the church. There was always more than one!

There is actually a word in the biblical Greek for the ruling body of elders; Presbuteros (πρεσβύτερος, Greek word #4245 in Strong’s ). This is the word from which the presbyterian denominations derive their name, and is often translated “elder” but also “presbytery”.

Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. I Timothy 4:14

I have heard pastors say “the elder was not an ordained position, but simply refers to any older man in the congregation”. This is wishful thinking on the part of a man who likes to have the preeminence in the local church. There are at least two places in scripture where “elder” was referred to, specifically as an ordained position.

And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. Acts 14:23

Notice the language here; there were ordained elders in every church. It does not say that they had ordained “an elder” in every church, but elders. Plural!

For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: Titus 1:5

The “cities” in those days would be considered small towns today. There was only one church in these “cities”, but there were always more than one elder ordained to that position, in each church.

This is the outworking of Jesus’ command in Luke 22 and Matthew 23, that they were not to run the church like a Gentile government. Like the Jewish Synagogue, the church was designed so that the elders could share the burdens of ministry. It was also designed as a system of checks and balances, so that one man would not become preeminent. The elders had real power in the church, and could remove elders who fell into sin, including the pastor, or “overseer”. (Sometimes translated as “Bishop” in the KJV)

Most “pastors” rebel against this system of accountability, and tell us that they “answer to God” as if they don’t answer to the congregation. This is why we have church “trustees” who are really qualified to be elders. The resulting system of compromise has resulted in many abuses over the years, some of which have become very famous and have brought great shame on the church. If the world hates you because you preach the gospel, that is one thing, but if they condemn you because of your open sin, this is something else! http://www.biblicalevangelist.org/jack_hyles_chapter3.php http://www.biblicalevangelist.org/jack_hyles_story.php

Notice Paul’s remarks to Timothy about the elders. Remember that Timothy was the pastor of this church;

Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. I Timothy 5:17

Notice that though Timothy was a pastor, there were other elders who also ruled within the church. Notice also that not all elders laboured in the word and doctrine, though some of them did. Timothy was not the only regular preacher at that church.

In first Timothy 3 the word translated as “bishop” really means an “overseer”. This would be the presiding elder, or pastor. A biblical “bishop” did not have responsibility for more than one church, and as an elder he could also be removed if he fell into open sin, and did not repent.

19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. 20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. I Timothy 5:19-20

Note that the original did not have chapter numbers or punctuation. This is one thought carried through these two verses, and an elder, including a pastor, who sins can and should, be rebuked publicly. The elder in question is the same elder who was ordained to that position in Acts 14:23, and Titus 1:5. Of course there needs to be two or three witnesses. God doesn’t want the church to be governed by gossip.

So where did the idea come from that the pastor is the only elder within a church? The short answer is the Roman Catholic church! The early reformers were universally trained by the church of Rome, and when they got saved and left, they carried with them the traditions they were trained in. For the most part they thought that the Catholic church had been truly Christian at one time, and merely needed reformation. As a result a great many errors were brought into protestant churches.

The Roman Catholic church actually refers to its priests as “the elder” of the church. This “elder” is ordained to that position by Rome. The idea of the one man pastorate is one of those Roman Catholic, Gentile, traditions which Jesus warned us against!

Because men like to be honored and called “Pastor, Pastor” they continue to interpret Scripture in a way consistent with the Roman Catholic Church!

So many Baptists rail against the errors of Rome, yet all the while perpetuating her errors!

What is my point in bringing this up?  It has to do with Revelation 17:5 “And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”

Here is a question to ponder; What is a daughter?  Who are the daughters of the Harlot?

My wife is a daughter of her mother.  She is the same type of entity as her mother.  Her mother is a woman, and so is the daughter.

A daughter is a woman who comes out of a woman. Therefore the daughter’s of the Harlot church are churches that came out of the church of Rome.

Most Baptists would agree with me on this, but they would stop short of saying that Baptists are daughters of the Harlot themselves.  The only church I was ever a member of was a Baptist church, but I have to say that the more I study, the more Baptists appear to be a part of Revelation 17:5.  I have only looked at one aspect of Rome’s teaching infecting Baptist churches here, but it doesn’t take a lot of study to find that the apple did not fall far from the tree!

The Arab/Iranian split

I have been saying for some time that the next major event on the prophetic schedule of events is the Psalm 83 war. As you examine just who the tribes listed are, you discover that they represent modern Arab nations which roughly form a circle around the nation of Israel.

One of the problems with this idea is that there are several Muslim nations which have expressed great animosity toward Israel, and which are not listed in the Psalm 83 account. Probably the most notable of these nations is the Islamic republic of Iran. Iran has expressed its intention to wipe Israel off of the face of the earth, and is furiously pursuing nuclear capability, with the express intention of carrying out this threat.

Furthermore, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Kamenei, recently said that Iran would help any nation that would attack Israel. This doesn’t fit the Psalm 83 scenario. The bible is true, however, and so we must conclude that something will occur between Iran and her Arab neighbors that will prevent them from joining the Arabs when they attack.

I can’t see an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear installations accomplishing this. If anything it would add fuel to the fire, unless the attack was so comprehensive that the entire Iranian army was immobilized. I don’t think this is the type of attack that Israel is considering, if they are considering an attack at all.

Please don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that Israel won’t attack Iran.  I really don’t know either way. I’m just saying that this attack, if it happens, will not be the only factor in the End Times equation.

No. I think something else will stop Iran from joining the Arabs.

It may be that we are actually seeing the beginnings of the Arab/Iranian split in the news today. The civil war in Syria is pitting Iranian Shiite proxies against Arab Sunni proxies. This is more likely to provide an explanation for this split. In fact, since Russia is also supporting Assad, it really looks like this conflict will ultimately be the thin edge of the wedge that is driven between the Arabs and the other Muslim countries.

Even this week there are more reports of friction between the Iranians and Hamas.

I expect that after Assad falls, the Sunnis will turn their attention East toward Iraq, and West toward Lebanon. In both cases the Shiite’s are in control today, and both are friendly toward Iran. We will see a changing of the guard in both of those nations, due to support from the Saudis, and perhaps also the Americans. By supporting the “Arab Spring” revolutions in Libya and Egypt, the Americans have shown that they are in over their heads!

It is better for Israel and the West, if the Arabs are disunited. It is also better for the west if secular dictators like Assad, Mubarak, and Ghadaffi are in power. Their main goal was to stay in power.  The religious dictators that are replacing them have an eschatology that calls for the destruction of Israel, and they don’t care if they, or their own people, die in the process. You can’t reason with such people!

When all is said and done, we will see the nations of the Gog and Magog war, of Ezekiel 38-39, stepping back from supporting the Arabs as they attack Israel. Their war will wait until a few years later.

I can’t say how long all of this will take, but I don’t think it will be decades, at least not more than one or two. Keep your eyes on the Middle East.

Keep watching Libya as well. The murder of the American ambassador this week shows that things have not settled down there just yet.

Muslim sensibilities aroused by film based on accounts in Hadith, and Qur’an.

US Ambassador to Libya killed

Stevens killed by treachery.

Did Christopher Stevens create the monster that killed him?

Libya is not a part of the Psalm 83 war, but will join Russia and Iran’s attack on Israel several years later.  What could cause them to avoid participation in this conflict?  Civil war?  Foreign occupation?  Temporary alliance with Israel’s friends?

The truth is that it is God who is in control. Though things look bad, and will probably get worse, don’t wring your hands in despair. What must be will be, and all the logic in the world can’t stop it. God is going to allow the creation of a world government. It is God who will give the Antichrist the power to rule the world, and he will be invincible until Jesus returns!

The most important question is “what is your status with God?” We are living in perilous times, but even if you don’t die in a terrorist attack, you will stand before God one day. Does Jesus know you? That question will be uppermost in your mind on that day, and the things of earth will fade into oblivion!

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: John 10:27

I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. John 10:14

OR, will He say to you;

And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7:23

Cutting Edge Error

It was shortly after I first got connected to the Internet, in late 1995, that I came across Cutting Edge Ministries of Attleboro Mass. I can’t remember which year it was in, but I followed that ministry for several years. I was a paid subscriber for some time, and I did buy several books from their ministry over the years.

There are several good articles about the Roman Catholic church that can be found on their website, as well as good articles about the New World Order, Harry Potter, and a number of other subjects. I believe the sites authors are sincere Christians, and are generally on the right track.

This does not mean I agree with them all the time. In fact there is one article in particular, which I was initially impressed with, but in hind-sight I have found several errors within.

The article I am referring to is entitled THE POPE IS DECLARED TO BE A “PROPER RECEPTOR TO THE NEW AGE CHRIST” [ANTICHRIST]!

First of all I have no reason to believe the events described in the article didn’t happen. I think they did. The problem is the author’s interpretation of those events.

The article begins with the author sneaking, incognito, into a meeting put on by the New England director of the House of Theosophy, one Bill Lambert. At one point he states;

“Lambert speaks with unusual authority in these Plans because he served on the New World Order planning committee entitled, “The New Jerusalem Covenant Project”, a planning document which details the exact way in which the Antichrist will arise, establishing his global economy, government, and religion.

He goes on to say: “Antichrist will be uniquely aided in his effort to establish a One-World Religion by a religious leader of great renown. This leader will already be recognized as a global religious authority, and will act in concert with Antichrist.

This fact is of HUGE importance, because such a religious leader would fulfill all the Biblical requirements for the False Prophet of Revelation 13. Who does Lambert say will be this global religious leader, who supports Antichrist so completely?

The Roman Catholic Pope!

At first I accepted the article and its conclusions, since I had grown up with the idea that the Roman Catholic pope was in some way connected to the Antichrist. The idea that the pope could be the false prophet was a perfect fit to the eschatology I was familiar with.  It was several years later that I began to ask questions.

Who says Bill Lambert, or anyone in the House of Theosophy has any authority when it comes to biblical prophecy? Who says that the people at this meeting didn’t know who the author really was? If the people in the room didn’t know who he was, you can be certain their demons certainly did!

Know for certain that anyone who advances in the ranks of the House of Theosophy has an evil spirit with whom he or she is in contact! Look at one instance when an evil spirit was encountered during the book of Acts;

13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. Acts 19:13-16

The evil spirit was not saying that he had no idea who the Jews were who were trying to exorcise him, he was actually saying that he knew that those Jews had no authority, and he had nothing to fear from them!

What does Jesus say about fallen angels?

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:44

The author of the Cutting Edge article, I believe David Bay, has made a fundamental error by believing something a New Ager has said. Does he think Satan is honest with his own people?  Yes, he makes a point that the speaker was sincere in his belief.  So what?

Satan is the father of lies, and you can be sure he lies to his own people as much as to everyone else. This means that when someone under the control of a demonic spirit makes a statement like this, there is a twist somewhere. You can bet your life on it!

As I have done my own research on the End Times, I have come to the conclusion that in order to get the world to believe the Antichrist is the Christ, he has to come up with another Antichrist, and false prophet. In order for Satan to get the world to believe Armageddon is over, and the millennial reign has begun, he has to give them a reasonable facsimile of the Tribulation, and Armageddon!

This is exactly what Paul says;

For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. I Thessalonians 5:3

In the aftermath of the Psalm 83 war, and the Gog and Magog war, the world will be saying “peace and safety” because they believe the Tribulation and Armageddon are over! I also think Satan is using sincere men, like David Bay and Cutting Edge Ministries, as unwitting accomplices, to prepare the world for his counterfeits. I don’t mean to single out Cutting Edge Ministries alone, for a great many other prophecy teachers have made similar errors.

Nevertheless, what Bill Lambert told the author of this Cutting Edge article is exactly what a follower of Satan would say, if the ideas that I am bringing forward are correct! If Satan was setting up the papacy for a great fall. If he was preparing the papacy and Rome, for destruction, as stand-ins for the Antichrist and Babylon, he would certainly tell people that the pope was the false prophet of Revelation 13:11.

He doesn’t have to spell it out, but depends on our pride to put the pieces together.

One of the other statements made in the article notes that the New Age plan is a perfect fit for the bible’s end times prophecies;

Remember, Lambert is revealing details of a human plan, created in cooperation with supernatural ‘Guiding Spirits’ to establish the New World Order. They have no idea that their Plan simply and accurately fulfills Bible prophecy.”

He says “They have no idea that their Plan simply and accurately fulfills Bible prophecy” yet I have to ask, doesn’t Satan know this? Of course he does. He planned it that way!

Satan knows the bible better than most Christians. He has had several thousand years to study it. When you study his confrontations with Jesus, you notice that he is always quoting Scripture! How else can he appear as an angel of light?

The devils know approximately how much time they have. This is apparent when you look at Jesus’ confrontation with the demons in Matthew 8:29

And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?

There is no way the demons could accuse Jesus of tormenting them “before the time” unless they had a pretty good idea of how much time they have left! The Lord had blocked them from understanding the gospel, and so they were surprised that the Son of God would come to earth so far from the End Times.

They may not know the “day nor the hour” but they have a pretty good idea of approximately how much time they have left. They have a plan, and everything they do is according to that plan. They weren’t surprised at David Bay’s visit to their meeting. They were waiting for him!

I am not saying to avoid the articles on the Cutting Edge website. All I am saying is that you need to exercise discernment when reading anyone’s article, even mine! Sometimes good men make serious errors!  Always check out the Scriptures, when anyone tells you something of any spiritual significance, even your pastor!

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39

45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. 46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. 47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? John 5:45-47

The Ten Kings or the Antichrist?

One big question that is often asked, among prophecy buffs is, “Who is the Antichrist?” Speculation is rampant, and I have seen names bandied about such as King Juan Carlos of Spain, Prince Charles of England, Tony Blair, Barack Obama, king Abdullah II of Jordan, and David Hasselhof.

Aiming at the Antichrist is aiming for the big target, but to date he has been rather elusive. In fact the bible gives a chronological order for the End Times events, which does not start with the unveiling of the Antichrist, but rather with some other events, including a ten nation confederacy.

First you need to identify the ten nations.

It is from this ten nation confederacy that the Antichrist will arise, and therefore I would suggest that the first thing one needs to do is to identify this confederacy.

If you were to identify a ten nation union, but it was not the confederacy the bible speaks of, your “Antichrist” would NOT be the biblical Antichrist!

To date most of the biblical scholars, but not all, are sure that the ten nation confederacy is the European Union, a revival of the old Roman Empire.

I too am certain that the EU does indeed have biblical prophetic significance. I am quite certain, however, that its significance is not what the main-line scholars think it is. For one thing there are way more than ten nations in the EU.

Another thing that most have not addressed is this; Satan knows what you are looking for. I think he is working very hard to give you what you expect! Of course it follows that when the whole world identifies a man as the Antichrist, you can bet he’s not the biblical Antichrist! No. He will be a smoke-screen, a counterfeit, meant to distract attention away from the real Antichrist.

Satan is rather intelligent. He has been working on counterfeits for some six thousand years, and has had more experience in this kind of thing than anyone else. He knows how to inspire men like Nero, Napoleon Bonaparte, Stalin, Hitler, and Mao. It would be rather easy for him to raise up someone very evil as a smoke-screen, or patsy, for the real Antichrist to defeat.

First, lets talk about the ten nation confederacy. The EU is larger than ten nations today. I expect that the financial crisis that is currently facing the EU will result in some nations leaving, and forming their own union. Will the number of nations left in the EU be exactly ten? I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.

The question remains “If the EU reduces down in size to ten nations, is this the ten nation confederacy of Daniel 7, and Revelation 12-17?” I think not, but I am sure that many prophecy scholars will think it is, and this will become the dominant view among Christians in the near future.

The bible is clear that the Antichrist’s kingdom will unite the whole world for the first time in history. It also makes statements that would exclude the EU as being the fulfillment of this prophecy.

And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. Revelation 17:12

The kingdoms of these ten world leaders are new kingdoms that only exist in the last days. This would exclude any old nation as being any of these kingdoms. On the contrary, the old nations of the world will be absorbed into these ten new kingdoms.

If a day with the Lord is as a thousand years (Psalm 90:4, 2 Peter 3:8), then for these kingdoms to exist for only an hour, it would be only for a few short years. The old kingdoms of Italy, Greece, Spain, France, etc. cannot be these kingdoms.

In 1974 the Club of Rome published a study called “Mankind at the Turning Point, the second report to the club of Rome” by Mihaljo Mesarovic and Eduard Pestel. In this report, the claim was made that in order for humanity to survive it must unite to form a world government. A plan was examined where the world was divided into ten super nations, which would then unite to form a world government.

It is my contention that these ten super-nations are the ten nations of Daniel 7 and Revelation 12-17. These nations will only exist for a decade or two, maybe less, and this is why it says they receive power one hour with the Beast.

We can see these nations forming today in entities like NAFTA, the EU, the African Union, and the Asian Union. In total there will be ten of them, but they are not fully formed as yet, and we will still likely see wars, and border changes, before all is said and done.

It is from one of these ten regions, or super-nations that the Antichrist will come. I would expect that he will most likely come from the nation that unites the Arabs, after the Psalm 83 war, and perhaps also after the Gog and Magog war. In between these wars he will likely be a minor official, and will likely also work closely with Israel.

The Arabs will be defeated by Israel during the Psalm 83 war, and I expect that they will have to work closely with Israel during that time of peace. It is this same treaty which is implemented at the end of the Psalm 83 war, that the Antichrist will confirm, at the end of the Gog and Magog war.

If it is the same treaty, then is it any wonder that the man who brokers the original treaty between Israel and the Arabs, will be identified as the Antichrist by many prophecy scholars?

Look at the wording we are given in Daniel 9:27

And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

The Beast, the Antichrist, will not originate the covenant, or treaty, which identifies him as the little horn. It is someone else’s covenant (read “treaty”). He will reinstate the treaty which resulted from the Psalm 83 war, in the aftermath of the next war, the Gog and Magog conflict.

It is this treaty which will create the conditions found at the beginning of the Gog and Magog war. This treaty which results when the Arabs are defeated, and is brokered by a European leader, will result in several years of peace, and prosperity between Israel and the Arabs.

It is this peace spoken of in Ezekiel 38:8. It does not exist today, but it will after the Arabs unite and attack Israel during the Psalm 83 conflict.

After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.

You see, so many Christians are in such a hurry for the End Times events to play out that they are predisposed to jump the gun. If it looks like the events of the End Times they will say “this is it!” without thoroughly investigating all the details. Satan knows this and is ready to take advantage of it! Thus when the Psalm 83 war ends in a massive Arab defeat, and a European leader assists in implementing a peace treaty, he will be identified as the Antichrist.  If that were to happen today it would be Herman Van Rompuy, but the evidence is that we may have to wait a few years first.

This person is one who may just show up in the next few years. Jimmy De Young of Prophecy Today says that Tony Blair is a good candidate for the Antichrist. What he means is that Tony Blair is in the running for European president.

There is another person of interest who may actually fit Mr. De Young’s idea of the Antichrist to a greater extent. Let me start by saying that this person is NOT the Antichrist. He may become the European President, in time, however.

I am referring to one Nichi Vendola, a rising star in the Italian political scene. One of the first articles that caught my attention was published in Haretz, an Israeli left-wing newspaper, in 2010. The title was “Catholic, Communist, and Gay”, and Nichi Vendola is everything a conventional bible prophecy scholar would characterize as being indicative of the Antichrist.  Mr. Vendola is the leader of the center-left coalition in the Italian parliament. Evidently he is running for president in the Italian general elections of 2013. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nichi_Vendola

Is Nichi Vendola the Antichrist?

Please understand that I am not saying Mr. Vendola is the Antichrist. Actually I am saying that, should he become the European president, he will still NOT be the Antichrist!

Should that eventuality occur, he could well be in a position to broker a peace treaty between Israel and the Arabs, in the aftermath of the Psalm 83 war. This kind of achievement would identify him as the Antichrist to many prophecy scholars, and yet I will still be saying “He is not the Antichrist!

There is a real possibility that Satan could be setting this man up as his patsy, to deflect attention away from the real Antichrist. He might become the European leader, and he might actually become one of the ten kings, but he’s not the Antichrist. If Nichi Vendola isn’t the patsy, then I am quite certain that there will be someone else from Italy who really looks like the Antichrist. Satan is sure to counterfeit the counterfeit!

As I have documented in several articles already, and in the pages of The Spirit of Prophecy, the Antichrist will come from the descendants of Esau, the brother of the biblical patriarch Jacob. Abdullah II, from the above list, is actually the most qualified to be the Antichrist, since he is officially the king of Edom.  He is not a descendant of Esau, that I am aware of, however, and therefore couldn’t be that person.  He is actually a direct descendant of Mohammed, and thus a descendant of Ishmael.

Abdullah’s children, on the other hand, have a Palestinian mother from the “west bank”, the very place where the Edomites migrated to, after the Roman expulsion of the Jews.

As I have noted in the past, the Jews refuse to say the name of the Lord, and have done so for so long that they can’t remember if it should be Yehovah, or Yahweh.  There are schools of thought in favor of either pronunciation.  The name the Jews use when they come upon the tetragramaton YHWH ( יהוה ) is “ha shem”, or “the name”.

Now, I would not be too happy if people were to call me “the name”.  I have a name and I have given it to people so they can identify me.  I’m not sure if God is really happy being called “the name”.  The question I have is; “Is the Lord angry enough to give the world an Antichrist called “the name“?”

Note that Abdullah’s son is prince Hashem bin al-Abdullah.  Note that the king also has a brother named Hashem.  I am not saying that either of these people is the Antichrist, but it would not surprise me if one of them takes on that role.

I am just saying that the whole royal family of the nation to the east of Israel are persons of interest, especially those in line for the throne.  In the mean time, before the Antichrist is unveiled, expect to see more from the European presidency.  Remember, unless the European president is a member of the Royal family of Edom, do not expect the holder of that office to be the Antichrist!

Something the Scholars Missed

Readers of this page may wonder why would a bible prophecy blog delve into the area of morality, specifically the area of marriage?

As I stated, every area touched on by Scripture has its ultimate fulfillment in End Times prophecy. This is why it is an error for pastors to ignore prophecy.

Paul stated that the End Times would be characterized by error on the subject of marriage.

1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. I Timothy 4:1-3

Most bible scholars believe that this refers to the Catholic Church’s prohibition for priests and nuns to marry, and leave it at that. I think it refers to something more. In fact, I think we can find what this refers to, if we search the Scriptures.

Most prophecy scholars don’t compare the millennial reign of Jesus Christ with the reign of the Antichrist. I don’t know why. Perhaps they don’t think there is any similarity. After all, the Antichrist is evil personified, and Jesus is God in the flesh, good personified.

What they are missing is that the Antichrist will attempt to fill the shoes of Jesus Christ. As a counterfeit, he will do what he can to meet the expectations of people who were raised in and around Christian homes, in societies that pride themselves as being Judeo-Christian. He will look like a Christian on the surface, it is only when you dig into the Word of God that you will see some differences.

For years I had wondered about what Daniel 11:36-37 means by the phrase “the desire of women”. Many scholars think that this means that he will be a homosexual. That is too obvious, and would be something that most evangelicals, and fundamentalists, would not be fooled by. No, it means something else.

And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. Daniel 11:36-37

The only way we can understand this passage is to dig deep into Scripture. Read about Sarah’s desire in Genesis 16, and how she wanted a child so desperately that she was willing to allow her husband to marry another woman, just so she could call the resulting child her own. It didn’t turn out as she had planned, but her actions were still governed by her deep desire to have a child.

Lot’s daughters had the same desire, and as a result seduced their father, because there was no other man around. (Genesis 19:30-36)

Rachel and Leah had the same desire, and did exactly the same thing with their maids as Sarah, in Genesis 30.

Tamar, Judah’s daughter in law, seduced her father in law, when she knew he was not going to provide her with another husband, after her first two had died. Read the story in Genesis chapter 38.

Hannah, Samuel’s mother, was so desperate that the priest of Israel thought she was drunk, as she was praying. She wasn’t drunk, but she was barren, and was desperate to have a child. So desperate that she promised to give her firstborn to the Lord. A promise she kept, by the way. (1 Samuel 1 & 2)

Elizabeth, John the Baptist’s mother, was still hoping for a child in her old-age. Her conception of John was a miracle granted to her by the Lord Himself. The story is found in Luke chapter 1.

In each of these cases these women had the exact same desire, the same desire Daniel is describing in verse 37 of Chapter 11. Simply, it is the desire to have a child, preferably by her husband.  Notice also the use of the word “reproach” in Genesis 30:23, and Luke 1:25, is exactly the same use as is found in Isaiah 4:1.

What does it mean that the Antichrist “does not regard” this desire? Don’t forget he is a king. A law maker. Remember that he will arise in a similar manner as the return of Christ. He will show up at a time when the world is recovering from a devastating war. A war that many will identify as having been Armageddon.

What is one of the characteristics of wars, throughout history? People die. Which gender generally suffers most in war? Generally it is the men who go to war, who die in the greatest numbers. With the advent of strategic bombing, women have not been as isolated from war as they had been in the past, but if the war is largely confined to the battlefield, the women can be hundreds, or even thousands, of miles away in relative safety.

While watching M*A*S*H one day, I noticed an interchange between the characters Klinger and B.J. Honeycutt.  In this episode Klinger’s wife was leaving him for his best friend, and Klinger was distraught. B.J. Responds to him that “there are plenty more fish in the sea” and Klinger responds “That’s right! There are a lot more women than men in the U.S.A.!” When he said that I realized that what he was saying was based on a historic truth.

The TV show M*A*S*H was based on events in the Korean “police action” of June 1950 – July 1953. This conflict came only five years after the end of the second World War. The USA lost some 405,399 men during WW2, resulting in approximately 405,399 extra women who had no man to marry.

Of course we all know of war brides who married American servicemen they met in their own countries, in either Europe, Africa or Asia. This compounded the problem for American women.  With so many unattached women around it is no mystery why the divorce rate went up after that war.

Klinger was correct, there were more women than men in the USA, in the immediate aftermath of World War 2!

This very same situation is prophesied to occur after the Gog and Magog war of Ezekiel 38-39. As I have laid out in several other articles, this war is likely to be the Armageddon stand-in which will give rise to the Antichrist.

Here is the result of this war;

1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: 2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel: 3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand. 4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. 5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD. Ezekiel 39:1-5

One sixth of the armies of the Russo-Iranian coalition will survive the war to return home. This will leave six women for every man who makes it home. This will be the time that the Antichrist is first making his mark on the world scene.

The nations who are listed in Ezekiel 38-39 are mostly Muslim today. As the reader is well aware, the Muslim nations universally practice polygamy. When the surviving soldiers return home they, and the women they encounter will expect that things will be as before, and that they will just have to share men, six women per man. It has always been this way in those countries.

This brings us to another situation described in Scripture. This time it is another, related, war…Armageddon.

Isaiah 3-4 is an interesting passage. It starts with God’s anger with ancient Israel, and describes His reasons for scattering them, then it seamlessly transitions into the future war of Armageddon. Some of the verses have a dual application, both for the ancient world and the future. You see, the reasons that God scattered Israel will not have been dealt with by the time they finally, fully return. God will deal with them during the Time of Jacob’s Trouble, also known as The Great Tribulation.

Study these verses carefully;

 And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty. 25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war. 26 And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground. Isaiah 3:24 – 26

Chapter 4

1 And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

Notice that these women are not asking for illicit affairs. They want the name of this man. A practice that is common with marriage. Women don’t take a man’s name unless they are married to him.

Notice also that they are not asking him to chose one of them, but that they all will take his name.

The reason is spelled out in verse 25 of the preceding chapter. Their men are mostly dead. Most of their men have died in the war. Lest you think this is an ancient war, read the next verses:

2 In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.

Who is the branch of the Lord? There is only one person in Scripture that this can refer to, the Messiah, Jesus Christ! Notice that this is the second coming of Christ, for this very same author tells us that He will NOT be beautiful and glorious at His first coming!

For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. Isaiah 53:2

Jesus was a normal man at his first coming. Isaiah 4 leaves no doubt that the events it describes are specifically timed at His second coming!

3 And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem: 4 When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.

The seven women of verse 1 are the very same women verse 4 speaks of, who have had their filth washed away. Both these women, and the men they marry, are holy men and women of God, survivors of the Tribulation and Armageddon.

There will be no unbelievers who survive the Tribulation, not even one! Every person mentioned in Isaiah 4:1 will be a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ! I can also assure you, that having seen the destruction of Armageddon first hand, these seven women will not be asking to marry this man, without first clearing it with the Lord Himself! Yes! Jesus will care about the desire of women!

For those who still don’t get it, “the desire of women” is spelled out for us in Isaiah 4:1.

5 And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence. 6 And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.

None of the situations described in this entire chapter have yet occurred, and will not occur, until the millennial kingdom is established.

So now we have a definite answer to the puzzle left to us by Daniel 11:37. The Antichrist will not “regard”, or concern himself with, the desire of women, while Jesus Christ, at His return will! The Antichrist will ban polygamy in the nations he is responsible for, in the aftermath of the Gog and Magog war.

While there will be some similarities between the reigns of Jesus Christ, and the Antichrist, this is one area where they are miles apart!

The problem is that because Christians have accepted the lies of Rome on the subject of marriage, most will not understand what is going on when the Antichrist bans polygamy. Their made-up “Jesus” would be more like the Antichrist, than the Jesus of the bible!  Most will think this is a sign of a Man-of-God!

When this Arab leader shows up, and imposes this type of law on his subjects, the west will applaud him, and will mark “X” on their ballot, beside his name, to accept him as the world leader!

They thought they were Christians, but they didn’t believe the Word of God!

And so, because of this very issue, Catholics, Protestants, Charismatics, Evangelicals, and Fundamentalists will be able to unite to crown the Antichrist!
