One big question that is often asked, among prophecy buffs is, “Who is the Antichrist?” Speculation is rampant, and I have seen names bandied about such as King Juan Carlos of Spain, Prince Charles of England, Tony Blair, Barack Obama, king Abdullah II of Jordan, and David Hasselhof.
Aiming at the Antichrist is aiming for the big target, but to date he has been rather elusive. In fact the bible gives a chronological order for the End Times events, which does not start with the unveiling of the Antichrist, but rather with some other events, including a ten nation confederacy.
First you need to identify the ten nations.
It is from this ten nation confederacy that the Antichrist will arise, and therefore I would suggest that the first thing one needs to do is to identify this confederacy.
If you were to identify a ten nation union, but it was not the confederacy the bible speaks of, your “Antichrist” would NOT be the biblical Antichrist!
To date most of the biblical scholars, but not all, are sure that the ten nation confederacy is the European Union, a revival of the old Roman Empire.
I too am certain that the EU does indeed have biblical prophetic significance. I am quite certain, however, that its significance is not what the main-line scholars think it is. For one thing there are way more than ten nations in the EU.
Another thing that most have not addressed is this; Satan knows what you are looking for. I think he is working very hard to give you what you expect! Of course it follows that when the whole world identifies a man as the Antichrist, you can bet he’s not the biblical Antichrist! No. He will be a smoke-screen, a counterfeit, meant to distract attention away from the real Antichrist.
Satan is rather intelligent. He has been working on counterfeits for some six thousand years, and has had more experience in this kind of thing than anyone else. He knows how to inspire men like Nero, Napoleon Bonaparte, Stalin, Hitler, and Mao. It would be rather easy for him to raise up someone very evil as a smoke-screen, or patsy, for the real Antichrist to defeat.
First, lets talk about the ten nation confederacy. The EU is larger than ten nations today. I expect that the financial crisis that is currently facing the EU will result in some nations leaving, and forming their own union. Will the number of nations left in the EU be exactly ten? I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.
The question remains “If the EU reduces down in size to ten nations, is this the ten nation confederacy of Daniel 7, and Revelation 12-17?” I think not, but I am sure that many prophecy scholars will think it is, and this will become the dominant view among Christians in the near future.
The bible is clear that the Antichrist’s kingdom will unite the whole world for the first time in history. It also makes statements that would exclude the EU as being the fulfillment of this prophecy.
And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. Revelation 17:12
The kingdoms of these ten world leaders are new kingdoms that only exist in the last days. This would exclude any old nation as being any of these kingdoms. On the contrary, the old nations of the world will be absorbed into these ten new kingdoms.
If a day with the Lord is as a thousand years (Psalm 90:4, 2 Peter 3:8), then for these kingdoms to exist for only an hour, it would be only for a few short years. The old kingdoms of Italy, Greece, Spain, France, etc. cannot be these kingdoms.
In 1974 the Club of Rome published a study called “Mankind at the Turning Point, the second report to the club of Rome” by Mihaljo Mesarovic and Eduard Pestel. In this report, the claim was made that in order for humanity to survive it must unite to form a world government. A plan was examined where the world was divided into ten super nations, which would then unite to form a world government.
It is my contention that these ten super-nations are the ten nations of Daniel 7 and Revelation 12-17. These nations will only exist for a decade or two, maybe less, and this is why it says they receive power one hour with the Beast.
We can see these nations forming today in entities like NAFTA, the EU, the African Union, and the Asian Union. In total there will be ten of them, but they are not fully formed as yet, and we will still likely see wars, and border changes, before all is said and done.
It is from one of these ten regions, or super-nations that the Antichrist will come. I would expect that he will most likely come from the nation that unites the Arabs, after the Psalm 83 war, and perhaps also after the Gog and Magog war. In between these wars he will likely be a minor official, and will likely also work closely with Israel.
The Arabs will be defeated by Israel during the Psalm 83 war, and I expect that they will have to work closely with Israel during that time of peace. It is this same treaty which is implemented at the end of the Psalm 83 war, that the Antichrist will confirm, at the end of the Gog and Magog war.
If it is the same treaty, then is it any wonder that the man who brokers the original treaty between Israel and the Arabs, will be identified as the Antichrist by many prophecy scholars?
Look at the wording we are given in Daniel 9:27
And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
The Beast, the Antichrist, will not originate the covenant, or treaty, which identifies him as the little horn. It is someone else’s covenant (read “treaty”). He will reinstate the treaty which resulted from the Psalm 83 war, in the aftermath of the next war, the Gog and Magog conflict.
It is this treaty which will create the conditions found at the beginning of the Gog and Magog war. This treaty which results when the Arabs are defeated, and is brokered by a European leader, will result in several years of peace, and prosperity between Israel and the Arabs.
It is this peace spoken of in Ezekiel 38:8. It does not exist today, but it will after the Arabs unite and attack Israel during the Psalm 83 conflict.
After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
You see, so many Christians are in such a hurry for the End Times events to play out that they are predisposed to jump the gun. If it looks like the events of the End Times they will say “this is it!” without thoroughly investigating all the details. Satan knows this and is ready to take advantage of it! Thus when the Psalm 83 war ends in a massive Arab defeat, and a European leader assists in implementing a peace treaty, he will be identified as the Antichrist. If that were to happen today it would be Herman Van Rompuy, but the evidence is that we may have to wait a few years first.
This person is one who may just show up in the next few years. Jimmy De Young of Prophecy Today says that Tony Blair is a good candidate for the Antichrist. What he means is that Tony Blair is in the running for European president.
There is another person of interest who may actually fit Mr. De Young’s idea of the Antichrist to a greater extent. Let me start by saying that this person is NOT the Antichrist. He may become the European President, in time, however.
I am referring to one Nichi Vendola, a rising star in the Italian political scene. One of the first articles that caught my attention was published in Haretz, an Israeli left-wing newspaper, in 2010. The title was “Catholic, Communist, and Gay”, and Nichi Vendola is everything a conventional bible prophecy scholar would characterize as being indicative of the Antichrist. Mr. Vendola is the leader of the center-left coalition in the Italian parliament. Is Nichi Vendola the Antichrist?
Please understand that I am not saying Mr. Vendola is the Antichrist. Actually I am saying that, should he become the European president, he will still NOT be the Antichrist!
Should that eventuality occur, he could well be in a position to broker a peace treaty between Israel and the Arabs, in the aftermath of the Psalm 83 war. This kind of achievement would identify him as the Antichrist to many prophecy scholars, and yet I will still be saying “He is not the Antichrist!”
There is a real possibility that Satan could be setting this man up as his patsy, to deflect attention away from the real Antichrist. He might become the European leader, and he might actually become one of the ten kings, but he’s not the Antichrist. If Nichi Vendola isn’t the patsy, then I am quite certain that there will be someone else from Italy who really looks like the Antichrist. Satan is sure to counterfeit the counterfeit!
As I have documented in several articles already, and in the pages of The Spirit of Prophecy, the Antichrist will come from the descendants of Esau, the brother of the biblical patriarch Jacob. Abdullah II, from the above list, is actually the most qualified to be the Antichrist, since he is officially the king of Edom. He is not a descendant of Esau, that I am aware of, however, and therefore couldn’t be that person. He is actually a direct descendant of Mohammed, and thus a descendant of Ishmael.
Abdullah’s children, on the other hand, have a Palestinian mother from the “west bank”, the very place where the Edomites migrated to, after the Roman expulsion of the Jews.
As I have noted in the past, the Jews refuse to say the name of the Lord, and have done so for so long that they can’t remember if it should be Yehovah, or Yahweh. There are schools of thought in favor of either pronunciation. The name the Jews use when they come upon the tetragramaton YHWH ( יהוה ) is “ha shem”, or “the name”.
Now, I would not be too happy if people were to call me “the name”. I have a name and I have given it to people so they can identify me. I’m not sure if God is really happy being called “the name”. The question I have is; “Is the Lord angry enough to give the world an Antichrist called “the name“?”
Note that Abdullah’s son is prince Hashem bin al-Abdullah. Note that the king also has a brother named Hashem. I am not saying that either of these people is the Antichrist, but it would not surprise me if one of them takes on that role.
I am just saying that the whole royal family of the nation to the east of Israel are persons of interest, especially those in line for the throne. In the mean time, before the Antichrist is unveiled, expect to see more from the European presidency. Remember, unless the European president is a member of the Royal family of Edom, do not expect the holder of that office to be the Antichrist!

Hi Dan! Much to think about. I know the younger son has the name Hashem; however, he isn’t the Crown Prince-his older brother is, Prince Hussein. In Dan 9:26-27, the Prince that shall come….seems like this young man at eighteen might be a better possibility.
Also, this has nothing to do with your post per se, but I’m a grandmama who buys a lot of clothing for my grandsons, and one thing I’m very careful of is that there are no numbers on shirts, because most of the time, they are identifiable occultic numbers, or numbers that sum to an occultic number, and no writing that I can’t read, or any type of occultic symbols – you’d be surprised how hard it is to find any kids’ clothes today that don’t have some sort of occultic number or symbols. I was impressed to be careful of this many years ago – wouldn’t want my grandsons wearing anything that might have an effect on them spiritually. Having said all this, look at the older son’s shirt he chose to wear for this family portrait – the number three is a biblical number, and it’s the number for God. I find it very unusual to see a three (3 isn’t an occultic #) on an ordinary non athletic shirt. The Roman numerals add to 67=6+7=13. Thirteen is a high occultic number. Just kinda hit me in the face since I’m careful about this very thing….

I know that the older brother is the crown prince, but still there is some indication in Daniel that the Antichrist will not be the first choice. I take this to indicate that he likely won’t be the older brother of whichever family he is from. The older brother is almost always the first choice, especially in Muslim countries.

And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.
The other thought is that if their father were to die in the Psalm 83 war, this would put the older brother on the throne of Jordan, but would still leave the younger brother free to take on other responsibilities. So if the Antichrist does not defeat Jordan (Edom, Moab, and Ammon) it could be because his trusted older brother is on the throne there.

He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.
Notice that in many places he is referred to as a “prince”, and it is only after taking the reigns of world power that he is called a king.
It’s interesting about the shirt. It could be that they are sending a signal to occultists. You are probably right that they are. They are a family worth watching, for sure!

I’m sorry to be a bit off subject, but can you help me to understand who is meant in Dan. 11:20? I understand the history of the characters up to the point of verse 20, and I agree that the vile person in 21, the verse you mention above, is the antichrist, but I am in the dark on the guy in 20.

Daniel 11 has some tough sections. Sometimes prophecies seem to skip back and forward in context.
Some have said that the early verses in 11 are a good match to some of the wars that went on after Alexander the Great’s death. I think, though, that they will likely have an End Times final fulfillment. Those old wars are foreshadows of future events.
They appear to be details of End Times wars which occur shortly before the Antichrist sets up his kingdom aka “wars and rumours of wars”.
Who are the “king of the north” and “king of the south”? I suspect these will be leaders of super nations, or economic blocks, like NAFTA or the EU. The king of the South could be the leader of the African Union.
Looking at 11:20, the “raiser of taxes” appears to be a contemporary of the Antichrist. I wonder if this will be one of those he subdues,(Daniel 7:24) in order to look like a hero? Getting rid of a “raiser of taxes” would be a popular move in most parts of the world.
These are just guesses on my part. (I like to think of them as “educated guesses”.) The only way we will know for sure is to keep on studying Scripture and comparing what we find there with current events. Keep in mind, however, that Satan would like to make us think prophecies are fulfilled, when in reality they are still yet to come.

I read years ago some commentary that listed the historical events that ran parallel to those verses, and that, because they were so accurate, it was another good reason for critics to say Daniel had to be written later.
I remember being impressed, but as I was not well versed in that part of history, I remained fuzzed every time I approached 11, until the other day when I came across a video that summarized what I had read years ago…. but only up to verse 11:19!

I’m researching Rev. 17:10-11 and I wonder if this “raiser of taxes” is the antichrist as “that man of sin” — before he is killed and goes into perdition– then when he is risen from the dead, and Satan/Apollyon indwells him, that in his estate, this vile person stands up… that man of sin revealed…now the Beast — the counterfeit of Father, Son, Holy Spirit?

I should have continued with my thoughts on the “raiser of taxes”.
The UN has lately been talking about a world wide income tax to support its activities. I can’t remember where I heard that, likely on CBC radio a few years ago. The proposal at the time was a 1% “voluntary” tax to be added to income taxes. Could this “raiser of taxes” be the first UN official/president who manages to get an international agreement to collect a world income tax?
I think this more likely refers to be someone later who increases the tax to an unprecedented level, causing a great burden on the world’s people. 1% isn’t much, but what if it suddenly became 10% on top of your national income tax, provincial/state, and municipal taxes?
In other words I am beginning to think this person will not “raise” taxes, like a tax collector, but he will be one who increases or “raises the level” of tax.
I really don’t think the “raiser of taxes” could be the Antichrist, for the simple reason that people who raise taxes are not popular. The Antichrist will be the most popular leader in world history. This person is not the Antichrist but a sign of the Antichrist.
On the other hand every hero needs a villain. In order for the Antichrist to make the world believe he is a Savior, he will have to convince them that someone else is the Antichrist.
Daniel 7:24 says that the Antichrist will “subdue” three of the world kings. It doesn’t elaborate on what the word “subdue” means. Does it mean that he will kill them? Could it mean that he gets them to surrender to his will? I’m not sure.
If he kills them, will they be replaced by someone else, a puppet, or will the Antichrist take over direct control of their territories?
One thing I do know for sure is that all ten of these world kings are of “one mind, and they give their power to the Beast”. If they are of one mind with the Beast, then each one of them will look remarkably like the Antichrist. I mean in the things they do, and the way they act.
If this is the case, then it would be rather easy for the Beast to frame some of them for being the Antichrist. It’s more likely that he will get rid of this person, with the promise of lowering taxes. That might just make him a bit of a hero.

First, I would have to say you are on the right track; The UN is intended to become the empire of the Antichrist. The Beast, however, is a man not an organization;
Revelation 13:18
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred threescore and six.
Every time the Beast/Antichrist is mentioned, it is in the context of a man, a human being. He is man’s idea of what the Messiah should be.
The eleventh “king” is the Beast, not a kingdom, but a king.
The United Nations does not have fathers who served one God; it is an ecumenical union who’s “fathers” served many gods. The Beast will be from a Muslim family, and by disregarding the Muslim Shariah (law) he will convince Christians that he is on their side!
Notice that the Beast is called “that man of sin” not an empire of sin. He is a man.
And yes, the requirement for salvation is to believe in Jesus. But what does it mean to believe? I would suggest that repentance is required of the saved. Repentance is defined as a change of mind. We change our mind about sin, and about our own righteousness, and we put it all at the Saviour’s feet. Then we read the Scriptures so that we learn to be like our Saviour.
