When studying any subject there is a need to define the terms used. Without agreed upon definitions we can have a conversation where everybody smiles and shakes hands, and no one understands what the other person was talking about! Or they think they know, but in reality they were talking about totally different subjects!
Many non-Christian organizations like the Mormons, the New Age movement, or the Jehovah’s Witnesses, use biblical terms, but redefine those words to mean something entirely different from the original biblical definition.
The term “Harlot” or “Mother of Harlots” spoken of in Revelation 17 is the one I wish to focus on today. The entity in question, Babylon, is spoken of as both a harlot herself, and a “Mother of Harlots”. The questions that immediately come to mind are “Who is this Harlot” and, “It can’t be me, or my church, can it?” Her condemnation is so severe that we immediately want to disassociate ourselves from her.
What is a harlot? Websters dictionary defines a harlot as:
Harlot /Har´lot/ (-lŏt), n. [OE. harlot, herlot, a vagabond, OF. harlot, herlot, arlot; cf. Pr. arlot, Sp. arlote, It. arlotto; of uncertain origin.]
1. A churl; a common man; a person, male or female, of low birth. [Obs.]
“He was a gentle harlot and a kind.” Chaucer.
2. A person given to low conduct; a rogue; a cheat; a rascal. [Obs.] Chaucer.
3. A woman who prostitutes her body for hire; a prostitute; a common woman; a strumpet.
While the first definition does not necessarily apply in this case, the second two definitely do.
A better way to define this word is to read the first chapter of Hosea, however. In this chapter we find the man of God, Hosea, is instructed to marry a woman who is a prostitute. He does so, and she has three children. The fatherhood of these children is in question and the second two are named Lo-ruhamah and Lo-ammi, or “not having obtained mercy” and “not my people”. There is a parallel in this passage to the woman of Revelation 17. The mother, in Hosea’s book, is compared to Samaria, the northern kingdom of Israel, which is the wife of God who has taken other lovers. The Harlot in Revelation 17, similarly, claims to be the bride of Christ, but she too has taken other lovers.
It may seem a strange question, but what is a daughter? My wife is not my daughter, however, she is someone’s daughter. A daughter is a woman who comes out of her mother. She is also a woman, just like her mother. A daughter, therefore, is the same type of entity as her mother. She has characteristics of her mother. If the Mother of Harlots is actually a church, then we should expect that her daughters are also churches. Women who belong to the Mother church are not her daughters, they are a part of the mother.
Most Protestants identify the Harlot of Revelation 17 as being Rome, or the Roman Catholic church. I personally believe that the Harlot will actually include the Roman Catholic church, although she is much bigger than merely this church. The Roman Catholic church claims to be the bride of Christ, and His representative on earth, yet she is heavily involved in ecumenism, in spite of the many biblical admonitions to separate from unbelievers. In fact this church has been fooling around with paganism since its creation in the fourth century AD. Celebrations like Christmas, Easter, Lent, and many others, are famous for having pagan origins.
So who are the daughters? If a daughter is a woman who comes out of a woman, then the Daughters of the Harlot, are churches who came out of the mother church… the protestant churches! This is not to say that there are not some truly saved people in these denominations, but the characteristics of the denominations themselves is that of harlots. I think God tolerates these daughters because sometimes people actually get saved as a result of their ministry.
Why would I call the Protestant denominations harlots? Aren’t they preaching the true gospel of salvation by grace through faith alone? Well they were, but even at the beginning they clung to false doctrines of Rome. Under Luther, the Lutheran churches clung to infant baptism, and a form of transubstantiation, doctrines not taught in the bible. The Presbyterians, and Anglicans, are also guilty in this same respect. Luther also believed that Christ was somehow present in the bread of the communion service, a form of transubstantiation.
We also see that from the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, many of these churches were closely involved with the governments of the nations, just like their mother. Many of these churches were happy to take the title of “State Church”, and to persecute other Christians who could not join them for conscience sake.
Do you remember the story about when Jacob left his father-in-law, Laban? There is an interesting sub-plot involving one of his daughters taking some of the idols from her father’s house.
17 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels; 18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padan–aram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan. 19 And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father’s. 20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled. Genesis 31:17-20
Evidently Rachel had developed a fondness for her father’s idols, and when she knew she was to leave them behind, she stole some of them. She was leaving her father, with the man-of-God, Jacob, but she still clung to certain areas of error. The exact same thing happened when the protestant churches left Rome. Many of the ideas and doctrines of Rome had their origins in paganism. When these churches left their mother they clung to ideas that did not come from the bible, and will ultimately lead them back to Rome.
It’s easy to point to Lutherans, or Presbyterians, as being compromisers, but the truth is that even Baptist, and the Plymouth Brethren churches, have their weaknesses. This is not to say that there aren’t true bible-believing, born again Christians in all of these Churches, but rather the doctrines they teach are a mixture of truth and error. We need to exercise discernment to tell the difference between truth and error. Our lives depend on it!
Depending on our traditions can be hazardous to our souls! When there is a conflict between the Word of God and our traditions, we need to learn to go with God, and leave the traditions behind!
I’m going to leave it here for today. Over the next few posts I will examine some of the erroneous teachings of these Churches. I’m no expert, but it doesn’t take an expert to compare the teachings and practices of Churches to the Word of God.

We all know there was a city called Babylon and its system of worship was about worshiping the sun god and the son of the sun god along with his wife. Satan, Nimrod and Samiramis they were called by many names. The worship of them brought about these pagan festivals that all of Christendom has placed on Christ which cannot be done. Deuteronomy 12:29-32 clearly explain. The Roman Catholic church and the pope whose name is attis ( man of sin ) has taken over the system and teaches satans lies to the children of the true living GOD to fornicate with many gods.( see the book The Two Babylons by Alexander Hislop )
Now to the daughters. The RCC split two times. First the RCC and the Eastern Orthodox yeah they have a pope too. Then the protesters (protestants) Anglican, Lutherans, prysbitarians, babtist, methodist then 38,000 new denominations since the 1800’s all reject and follow some of the teachings of the RCC. But in whole agree with the RCC.
God never said our priest should not take wives and screw little boys. That cannot produce offspring except more queirs.
But he does say if you partake in their sin you will take part in their destruction. False Christians produce False Christians this is true. So if you are in one of these denomination then no matter what you say you are being lied to about GOD they do not know Him. As your Bible says. ( You call me Lord Lord but won’t do anything I have said depart from me you workers of iniquity.) You know, you continuous sinners. They don’t know the law and don’t follow it at all. They did away with it. And all His Holy Days that tell you who He is. And traded it for the LIE. The Israelites that left, the 10 tribes and the other 2 tribes Judah and Benjamin His children not just all the other people.
Remnant. These are who read there Bible for themselves and ask GOD to open it for them and found out the rest (you know) of they churches or people were lying to them. Then began to seek GOD with all their hearts, souls, minds and strength. And started to do what the Bible says to do instead of trying to do away with it. We are out here. Seek to find the narrow path that leads to life. For wide is the path to destruction. Many seek with the wrong attitude but few shall find it. I hope you do. The 144,000 will, but that is just a few. In the millennium they will have their spiritual bodies and will teach the rest so there will be no one who does not know then. Then at the end of that he will release satan for a season to see who will turn back. You will get your chance to understand either now or then. Your life depends on it.

Yes, you are right. It is only possible to scratch the surface on a blog post. If you go into too much detail you lose people.
My book is more detailed, but it too is an overview. My goal is to get people doing their own studying.
I would note, however, that Revelation 18:4 says “come out of her, my people”. Now the context of the verse is the End Times, and I believe all church-age believers will be raptured before this event. Nevertheless, it appears that there are true believers among the Harlot and her daughters, not only now, but even after the rapture.
Why does God tolerate the Harlot and her daughters? Because they have bibles, and people sometimes do get saved even in these denominations! he will deal with them in His own time.
So going by my separate comment and what I heard, we are in the End Times!!

Having given this some thought over the years I have concluded the harlots are indeed the various denominations which came about after or out of Rome. The simple reason is that God’s people are a people, not a church congregation but those who are His. It is about kingdom building not church building. I know, having put many churchgoers to the test and they are, in my experience, almost all, ignorant fools, an observation based upon a proverb demonstrating they rely on thoughts (lies) and not divine knowledge. There is no way all believers will be (raptured or even) saved – after all Satan is a believer. Their error is based on a misunderstanding of the text I will never leave you or forsake you. That is true, the problem is not God but man, the individual; they do not reciprocate hence the statement from the bridegroom etc. – I never knew you. It is a two way thing.
I discovered the following comment earlier today on You Tube (which I thought was not unreasonable) concerning many church goers today. I otherwise have no knowledge of the individual nor endorse him in any way:
“I have discovered that most Christians are as dumb as a bag of hammers, as uninformed greedy whores, looking for money and running round behind people like Rick Warren and Joel Osteen…they have no spirituality, carrying bibles and stinking between their legs. It is pathetic that they call themselves Christians and I can hardly stomach them. I wonder if they that find Jesus conclude that means they now have a complete license to sin as much as they want their debt being paid up in full. It is however a race which means you have to move forward, not stagnate in the things of the flesh.
Solomon said something about finding one man in a thousand worthy of respect. I am not sure if I can honestly say I have found one, in this age and if I have they were not a professing believer.
His tolerance of this latter day church of dogs, swine and whores is becoming short lived.
The key question is “Does Jesus know you?”
Who is the whore of Babylon and who are her daughters?
It seems to me to be a rather simple and straight forward question and answer. The whore Babylon is (in my opinion) all religion, Christian or pagan it does not matter. Religion is man’s attempt to connect with and worship god (a lower case g for a reason).
In ancient times when the Israelite people needed an altar to God for the sacrifice of sheep, goats and bulls, God forbade them from building that altar. They were to simply throw rocks together in some sort of pile and do no construction. It is interesting how people today and throughout history want to build physical monuments as well as spiritual ones to their gods. They may even think that they are building these things to the honor of our Heavenly Father who gave us His Son, Jesus Christ. But they are not doing this at all. They build physical constructs and spiritual in the form of ideas and doctrines that Our Father has clearly warned us to not be deceived by time and again through the Holy Scriptures.
These false doctrines and ideas are all curiously completely ruled by the deceitful hearts and minds of men. And then therefore are ultimately ruled by Satan himself. Religion is man’s attempt to reach god.
We can see this illustrated remarkably succinctly in the account of the construction of the Tower of Babel from which Babylon gets its name. The people were working together in one accord to build a tower to reach heaven and God. As we recount the story we see that God was most displeased with man’s efforts and He divided the people by giving them different languages. No amount of effort on the part of anyone will result in their salvation. As Abraham’s faith was counted to him for righteousness, so it is also with us.
True Christianity is God’s heart of Love reaching down to us to offer us eternal life and salvation through the Blood of Jesus Christ. Every religion that has ever been or will ever be is simply the opposite of this and counterfeit and thus borne of the harlot and whore of Babylon. All of these things please the flesh and tickle the ears of those deceived by them. These people, who are deceived, at some point in their lives, made a choice and departed from the pure simplicity of the love of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The subsequent natural result is that after they have made this choice they go deeper and deeper into deception and fall into a ditch. This is the way that God Himself designed it. He doesn’t want people to be deceived but he will not go against a man’s free will to choose to serve Him or not. To not serve God is to serve Satan and every single person on the face of the earth who does not serve God will find themselves in the system of religion of the world and will eventually worship the beast and Antichrist.
The people of God are those who worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.
The whore or harlots can only be apostate churches. Pagan churches/religion were never “in the house of God.” Remember, judgment first in the house of God. 1 Peter 4:17. The apostasy likely began in the 4th century. Then in the 6th century, the man of sin was revealed.
The apostasy began in the first century, as is alluded to in many places in Scripture. Most of Paul’s epistles were written to combat heresies that had already made their way into the Church.
The man of sin is a man, not an office.
He is one man, born to a woman, who will have sons and nephews, as revealed in Isaiah 14.
Rome is a decoy, which Satan has set-up so he can destroy her at a time when people will think that Revelation 17 and 18 have been fulfilled by her destruction.
I came from a position like yours, where I was taught that Rome was the Harlot, but the more I studied, the more I came to the conclusion that Rome is a decoy, to be used and discarded by Satan when it is convenient!

First, Exposethem511 is incorrect in his timeline. If we say that Rome is the Harlot, then how do we understand their underlying paganism? Rome is certainly a counterfeit, her paganism goes all the way back to Babylon, but the Gnosticism of Rome was being battled against by the Apostles in the first century!
What the Spirit of Prophecy does is to expose counterfeits, and counterfeits of counterfeits! Satan knows that many professing Christians will never join together in Ecumenical unity, unless he is able to get them to conclude that the danger is over. This is Rome’s role. Once Rome is destroyed, these professing Christians will conclude that the Gog/Magog war was Armageddon, and now they have come through it the danger is past!
The biggest End Times danger is deception, and Satan is a master of this art! “When they say peace and safety, then sudden destruction will come upon them, and they will not escape”!

Good article, I would say that SDA churches apart of the harlot too
I think the apostasy is a general thing; You won’t find true churches unless you look in the house churches, and small congregations who stick to the Word.
Even most fundamental independent Baptist churches teach a lot of Rome’s doctrines, thinking they are teaching the Word of God!
As for the SDAs, it isn’t wrong to worship on the Sabbath, or on Sunday, but it is wrong to make a law of it. Christians are to have communion with the Lord 7 days a week. I saw some of their videos on eschatology a few years ago, and they are way off base!

Dan, SDA’S do not make a law of keeping the Sabbath, as you put it…They are merely keeping the law of God. Everyone is going on about keeping the Word of God, yet demonstrate here now ignorance of His word by saying it’s not wrong to keep the Sun Day as the Sabbath? As for SDA doctrine, they do not follow the rest of the Protestant world’s ideology or doctrine. There is a complete breakaway from the RCC in every respect. Blessings in Christ

Very clearly, when you compare this with Hebrews 4, you see that the seven day week is a picture of the week of earth’s existence. Our Sabbath is the Millennial reign of Christ.
While all of the ten commandments are repeated in the New Testament the Sabbath law is not, unless you count Hebrew 4, which as I said is clearly about the millennial reign.
Christians do not have a Saturday Sabbath, nor a Sunday Sabbath, because all true believers have communion with the Holy Spirit seven days a week.
No, Christians do not have a Sabbath law, not pertaining to Saturday nor to Sunday.
I did attend a Messianic congregation for a while, and what I found is that there is a very heavy emphasis on law-keeping to the point that the Messiah in the Passover is hardly even mentioned! No! It is ALL about Him!
So I walked away from that congregation, and don’t attend anywhere now. We do family devotions on Sunday morning, but I cannot countenance people who set themselves up as lording it over the brethren!

The bible teaches that it is not wrong and in fact God claims to have given David his wives, with the exception of Bathsheba, and He would have given him more had he asked!
The arguments in the above article are exactly the same as I have heard used in Baptist Churches. They don’t come from the bible at all, but from man’s reasoning, and are identical to the Roman Catholic doctrines! Clearly then, both Baptists and SDAs have not repudiated everything that came from Rome.
Both the Greek and Roman empires prohibited polygamy, with the one exception in both cases, being Israel! Jesus told his followers to obey the Jewish interpretations of the law, and the law, and Jewish interpretations of it, did indeed allow polygamy in that day!
As I have noted in some of my articles, the bible actually prophesies that Jesus will allow polygamy in the early years of the Millennial Reign! He has a purpose in allowing this practise!
So I am correct that SDAs have not repudiated every doctrine that originated in Rome. I am sure that if we were to examine everything they believe we could find others as well, but this one should suffice.
Having the wrong view of polygamy will lead one to the wrong interpretation of an important End Times prophecy pertaining to the identity of the Antichrist!
The Antichrist will oppose polygamy after the Gog/Magog war, when only one out of six attacking soldier is able to return home. This will be the time when this practise will be needed in all those countries. The Antichrist’s prohibition will make most Christians think he is a man of God when in truth the opposite is the case; In the same situation, JESUS WILL ALLOW POLYGAMY as we have seen in Isaiah 4!
So, I do indeed think the Seventh Day Adventists, along with the Baptists, Presbyterians, Anglicans, Lutherans, Evangelicals, Pentecostals, and Catholics are daughters of the Harlot! The Harlot is not Rome; She is Babylon!

First, let me say that there are some true believers in the SDA Church, just as there are some in the Roman Catholic Church. Those who read the bible without paying attention to the teachings of the group are in a good position to receive God’s inspired truth. Don’t use the SDA bible, but get a good literal translation, like the AV or KJV. Just make sure you use one based on the Textus Receptus, and doesn’t use paraphrase as a translation method.

@ Dan, you are mistaken. The harlot is Rome but is being analogized as Babylon as a matter of type and anti-type which the Bible clearly depicts in many instances.
I have laid out my reasons why Rome is a counterfeit of the counterfeit, both in The Spirit of Prophecy, and in many articles on this blog.
I did not come to this conclusion lightly, but resisted it until there was no way I could ignore it any longer. The evidence is overwhelming!
Be very careful with allegory. God doesn’t use it often, and when He does He says so.
The prophecies against Babylon in the OT were never fulfilled. That city, known today as al Hillah, Iraq, will one day soon rise again as a world leader.

I don’t go much on symbolism-in fact as a non-Christian I like the Bible but to me a harlot is a harlot-not a church.. I like to and do PERSONALISE the Bible eg. ‘The son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners'(Mark 14:41) Note I use lower case. This is about me and my son to me. Totally valid. What about ‘Your father was a rogue and he married a harlot. She became an adulteress and now shes a witch.’ No need to interpret this-it is what it is. I know a few daughters of harlots-nothing church-like of them.The trouble with arguing is the argument becomes more important than the substance. If one personalises the Bible as I do it may empower in a way you hadn’t thought about.. ‘Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof'(Matthew 6:34)

I would have to say that the exception is that the Church (all true believers) are compared to a bride in Scripture. The Harlot is also a church, and assembly, but this assembly is unfaithful.
An excellent Old Testament parallel is found in Jeremiah 3:1-14. Here God has two wives, Judah, and Israel, and this innocent Bigamist has been wronged by both of His wives! And yet, He still loves them!
So, if the context requires the use of symbolism, then I wouldn’t be afraid to use it. Sometimes it actually makes the text more understandable!

First, you need to realize that the Feast of Weeks, or the day of Pentecost, as in Acts 2, was always on a Sunday, since the time it was instituted by Moses! Read my article on Communion and the Lord’s Day Check-out the biblical references used.
The Holy Spirit first came in power on Sunday, the Day of Pentecost when the Jewish believers met in Jerusalem in Acts 2. That was the day Peter was preaching and the Christian Church was born! It was exactly 7 weeks to the day from the day the Lord Jesus Christ was raised from the dead! This is why Sunday is called “the Lord’s Day”; It is the day He was victorious over death, and we need to celebrate this victory!
When you study the feast and the circumstances there is no question that it was God’s plan, from the time of Moses, that the Church would be born on a Sunday!
I am aware that the Roman Catholic Church claims that they instituted Sunday worship, but you need to realize that this is a lie from the Devil himself! Christians have always worshiped on Sunday since the founding of the Church in Acts chapter 2! The martyrs, such as the Anabaptists, and the Waldenses, also worshiped on Sunday, so don’t think this is only a Catholic thing, or that it came from them; it did not!

Awesome study. It confirms what I learnt about the mainstream churches. It almost grieves me, having grown up in the church. In these end days, the Lord called me out of the system and gave me Rev 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven say “come out of her my people and partake not of her sins, so that you do not receive of her plagues” (something like that!) when I kept hearing “come out of her” repeatedly in my spirit whilst learning about the pagan roots of xmas.

We attend a Brethren Assembly, and the Church where I was saved is much further down the road to Apostasy. I believe the Brethren Assemblies will also be apostate by the time of the Rapture, but I continue to attend, and to speak the truth as the Lord enables me. My hope is that the Lord will help me wake up his remnant in this church.
I do believe that Hebrews 10:25 is very applicable today. I believe that I have a responsibility to my brothers and sisters in Christ, to at least warn them. We tried going it alone for a few years, but I found I missed the fellowship. As the bible says “Iron sharpens iron”, so it actually does help me to listen to others. I am also committed to being a Berean, so I do speak to elders who make errors from time to time.

Thank you Dan, yes there “a few” who please God who remain in the system. Eg Sardis. Fellowship can take other forms too, which I do. I am not isolated, though have been set apart for a time (home churches will be the order of the day at some point) to minister unto the Lord among other things.

Why is it so wrong to worship on the seventh day? The Israelites did not name the days, but counted from what is Sunday now as the first day of the week and the Sabbath as the Seventh day. The days of the week are all named after paganism. Sunday as the day of the Sun God–even the Sabbath day they named it after Saturnalia. I once went to a conference center in Southern California and the speaker was Walter Martin who has been hailed as a theologian who is an expert in cults, and yet he completely ignored the church who has added more paganism than any other church. Why? Who was he really working for? For those who don´t seek fellowship and isolate themselves from all believers, they are forgetting that Jesus (Y´shua) or whatever name you feel is the correct name for the Messiah, came to make disciples. A disciple is not afraid even to enter the doors of a denomination if the Holy Spirit beckons them to do so. I have seen people´s lives transformed in the the streets when the gospel is shared–and as promised, the Holy Spirit comes into their lives and they are sealed. Paul was not afraid to enter the synagogues and share his faith in Messiah nor was Jesus afraid to face the Pharisees even as a child. “He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 The most important sign of a true follower is a love for righteousness. This is what honors our Creator more than anything else. Isaiah 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?
16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
He did tell us to separate ourselves from apostasy, but he did not abolish discipleship.
