In Memory of a “Monster”

It’s been a rough week.  As a result of the events of last week I need to write this as a letter to the people of Canada;

On Tuesday evening my mother called to tell me that a friend had taken his own life. She said that he was under police investigation for possession of child pornography, and had taken one of his father’s guns, and had been declared “armed and dangerous” by the Toronto police. Later on Monday (March 7, 2016) his body had been found and it was determined that he had shot himself.

I went on-line and searched for his name “Darren Laite” and found a lot of hits with that name.

The first article I came across was from a local Toronto paper, which described him as a “pervert” and “a monster”. I won’t pass along that link because this isn’t journalism, and people should not support or read articles like this.

I hadn’t actually seen Darren since his father’s funeral around 25 years ago.

What I remember of him is an innocent young child who asked a lot of questions. At his dad’s funeral we spoke and had a pleasant conversation. There was no hint of emotional trouble.

After my family moved away from Richmond Hill, Darren’s parents, frequently with him along, often came to visit us at out new location in Innisfil, Ontario. His dad was an avid fisherman, and ice-fisherman, so they would drop-in after fishing in nearby lake Simcoe, in both summer and winter. I cherished those visits.

Darren’s adopted dad was one of my Sunday-school teachers, and he was the first person who ever pointed out some of the errors of Reformed Theology to me. He was a kind, generous, and happy man.  A man who loved the Lord, and it showed.

As for Darren, he wasn’t a monster, he was just a kid, when I knew him.

It turns out that he was also a troubled kid, something I knew nothing about until last week. In that same conversation my mom had with his mom, she shared how Darren had been sexually molested when he was 8 and again when he was 10 years old. She shared that when the second event happened he had “gone crazy” and had spend 3 weeks in a psychiatric institution.

I you search for Daren Laite, or Darren Padilla, you will find a lot of articles about his crimes, but you will not get any background information. The articles you read will paint him as a pervert, or as a criminal. The truth is that there are only 2 known incidents, over 21 years, and I don’t think two incidents justifies the title of “monster”.

The first incident involves a time when Darren climbed down under an outhouse so he could observe women from underneath. I certainly find this incident troubling.  Even disgusting.  He pled guilty to public mischief, and that was the last we heard of him until last week.   It reminds me of stories other boys told when I was in elementary school. In fact the boy I heard it from in elementary school was the son of an Ontario Provincial Police officer.

Boys talk like this, but in most cases they grow up, mature and become responsible citizens. It almost seems like Darren’s emotional growth was stunted. I believe it was severely affected by the abuse he suffered as a child. That abuse did not come from his adopted father, or any one else in the family, that I am aware of.

I have not heard specifically from his mother on this, but I believe the molestation came from a friend. In fact I think it was someone from their church, who was also a mutual “friend” of my family. I have personal knowledge of what this person was like, and I know that he did spend time at the Laite’s home.

I have been in other churches where abuse was going on. It seems that some abusers take advantage of the trusting nature of some Christians. The bible is clear that the only person we can trust completely is the Lord Jesus Christ himself. With everyone else, we need to be on our guard.

This is nothing new, and is not exclusive to religious establishments; wherever people have authority over others, it is frequently abused. It happens in public schools, and private schools, in sports training establishments.  I don’t think there is any establishment where this type of behaviour never occurs!

What I found so upsetting about the news reports is the implication that “Darren Laite is an evil person, and we are good in comparison”.  In reality Darren Laite is your equal before God!

I would like to ask the police investigators, and journalists on this case; Have you ever purchased legal pornography? Did you ever go to the corner store and buy a Playboy magazine, or Hustler, or any of the pile of “legal” pornography they sell there? Did you ever download “legal” pornography from the internet? Did you ever go to a strip club?

Then what makes you think you are different from Darren Laite?

Women of Toronto; Did you ever have an abortion? That makes you a murderer. Abortions are performed in the hospitals and clinics of Toronto all the time. The city is full of murderers.  Did you ever campaign for a “women’s right to choose”?  That makes you an enabler of murderers!

I am not excusing what Darren did, but it appears that he was so struck in his conscience that he took his own life. It appears that he could not live with the shame of what he had done, or with the shame of the public humiliation of another trial. Maybe he did not want to see his family torn apart, or his life destroyed, as would undoubtedly have occurred as a result of the press dragging this out in public, again.

On the other hand we have a nation full of murderers who strut around and claim “it is my right!”, and “it is my body” when in fact the child in your womb is the body of another person. We have police officers who will charge a man with possession of child pornography (for the possession of one or two pictures), when some of these same officers have a collection of legal pornography themselves! (I do not have specific knowledge of this, but I know this is common)

When you stand before almighty God, the laws of Canada will have no jurisdiction in that court! No excuse!  God looks at you, and he looks at Darren Laite, and He says; “I see no difference”! The laws of God stand above all the laws of all the nations of the earth. Just because certain immoral activity is protected by the laws of Canada, it does not mean you will have any protection when you stand before God Almighty!

Romans 3 is about you, Toronto;

9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; 10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17 And the way of peace have they not known: 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.

While Isaiah 5 is specifically about Israel, it certainly has an equal application to the city of my birth, Toronto, Canada;

20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

Canada is a nation of hypocrites, from top to bottom; from the leadership of the government in Ottawa, to the garbage collectors in our streets. From our Pastors to our Professors, we are all the same and under the judgment of God. Darren Laite, while he is mocked in our press, is actually a representative of the Canadian people!

What Darren did was bad, but it was not nearly as bad as those people who kill the child in their own womb! He was not as wicked as those who make laws which allow women to kill their own children! Yes that’s right, our politicians are worse people than Darren Laite/Padilla!

Rest in Peace, Darren

Canada, you need to stop pointing at the sins of others, and clean-up your own act!
